Earley's introduction marks a new chapter for Texas A&M baseball

Bubbles filled the air. “Rattlin’ Bog” blared over speakers. Throngs of Aggies cheered loudly.

It was as if Texas A&M hit a home run. And maybe it did.

Michael Earley, the Aggies’ hitting coach the last three seasons, was introduced as Texas A&M’s 21st head baseball coach on Tuesday before an enormous crowd in a ceremony inside Kyle Field’s Hall of Champions.

Earley replaces the previous coach, who unceremoniously left for Texas the day after A&M fell to Tennessee in the third game of the Men’s College World Series Finals.

That coach's name was never mentioned.

"This is the future of Aggie baseball. None of it is about someone who left," A&M President Mark A. Welsh III said. "It's about a leader who will fight to keep his team together, about a coach who will keep his team tougher on and off the field and a coach who knows there is unfinished business in Omaha, Nebraska."

Earley, 36, has already begun successfully fighting to keep the team together.

Still, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts admitted Earley wasn't initially considered a prime candidate for the position but made an outstanding impression during a Zoom interview.

"After the first Zoom I did with him — I'll just be totally frank — I was very, very pleasantly surprised," Alberts said. "I didn't know what to expect. I'd say he knocked it out of the ballpark on the initial Zoom.

"After that Zoom, it became very clear to me not only was he kind of a fun candidate to talk about, but he was a very serious candidate based on how he performed."

"This is the future of Aggie baseball. None of it is about someone who left. It's about a leader who will fight to keep his team together, about a coach who will keep his team tougher on and off the field and a coach who knows there is unfinished business in Omaha, Nebraska."

Time will tell whether Earley will be a "home run hire."

But if early returns are any indication, the Aggies can anticipate building on the success of the 2024 season, which ended just last week in the finals of the MCWS.

Dressed in black slacks and a maroon plaid jacket, with his wife and three children among the crowd, Earley immediately thanked a group of players who vigorously lobbied on his behalf for Alberts to name him the replacement for the coach whose name was never mentioned.

"Every now and then, you put your arm around a player and tell them you love them," Earley said. "They know it. But for the most part, you're just coaching them.

"For them to see it and to feel it and to know I care about them means everything to me. It is truly baseball second for me.

"I've got to win baseball games. I fully understand that. But how I treat these people as people and the relationships we build, they're all going to be different. But when they walk out there, they'll know I respect them, I love them, I care about them, and whoever they are, I will do the best for them to succeed."

The Aggies succeeded at the highest level in program history last season.

They set a school record with 136 home runs, were sixth in the nation in total runs, led the nation in drawing walks, posted a 53-15 record and reached the championship series for the first time in school history.

However, the surprising coaching departure left the program facing disarray.

Most of the top players entered the transfer portal as programs around the country hoped to poach A&M's roster.

However, a cascade of support from former and present players convinced Alberts to include Earley among the nine candidates he interviewed for the position.

"I can't honestly tell you that I thought from the moment we started the search that Michael Earley is likely the person we'd be introducing today," Alberts said. "That's why you do a real search.

"Over the years in hiring coaches, there's certain things you look for. There's no guarantee, but just having clear vision, clear eyes around where we are today, where we think we can go and what are the steps in between and how we're going to execute it really is meaningful to me.

In Michael Earley’s three seasons as hitting coach at Texas A&M, the Aggies hit 306 home runs and drew 1,178 walks.

"I knew the players respected him. That's really, really important. You have to hire coaches, I believe, in his day and age that the players identify with. But that's just a small component. There has to be more to it."

Since Earley was hired, star players Jace LaViolette, Gavin Grahovac and Hayden Schott announced they would return to play for A&M next season. Several others are expected to announce soon.

"I fully understand that the players opened this door for me," Earley said. "They did. I had to hit the marks and give them my vision and be super clear about it."

His vision came across as crystal clear.

Though he has never previously been a head coach, Earley sold Alberts on his vision of the program.

"He's a confident young man," Alberts said. "I like that. I don't know how you're going to coach SEC baseball without having confidence in your abilities.

"There's a difference between confidence and arrogance. I didn't think he had that. I think he projected the fact that he had confidence. And then, he projected the fact that he had enough humility to recognize that he didn't know all the answers and he was going to need help. He was willing to do what it took to get the type of people who could fill in his blind spots and gaps. To me, that's part of great leadership."

A&M is counting on Earley to lead the baseball program to even greater success in Omaha.

"I'm glad I'm here," Earley said. "They asked me, 'How long do you want to be here?' I'm like, 'I'm just trying to win my first game.' I hope I win a lot of baseball games, and I'm here for a long time."

I think this could go well and clearly our leadership cut through red tape in all directions to make this happen. I'm impressed by that.

Michael Early displayed command leadership during this announcement, he's committed to excellence, knows what to do and how to build a team. What a great recovery by the AD to make the courageous but correct decision to promote from within. Awesome leadership and skill. Congratulations to the team that had a record season but did not get to celebrate and be recognized because of a person who shall be unnamed was more worried about his own self than the young men he rode the coattails. He used a term selfish in his press conference hypocritically.

"character matters"

Also impressed with President Welsh and The AD. Great team.
