Quarterback Conner Weigman is hard at work, rehabbing from injury and mastering Collin Klein's offense. In an exclusive interview, Weigman provided an update on his return and spoke about Texas A&M's camaraderie now that workouts have begun.

Key notes from Conner Weigman interview

  • I’ve been good. It has been a full-court press rehabbing this ankle and trying to get back for spring ball.

  • I started running. This has been the best week I’ve had. Sometimes it’ll get sore, but this was a complete week. We pushed it this week to see where we were at because spring ball is coming up. I like where we’re at. It’s a little bit of everything as I try to get the strength and mobility back into my ankle.

  • The trainers are saying that I finally look like an athlete again.

  • I’m not with the main group during workouts because they have me doing stuff on my ankle right now. Everybody is getting after it, and there is some competition stuff. It’s building the camaraderie. If you lose, you have punishment, and if you win, there is a reward. They are pounding the mentality into us that winning is good and losing is bad.

  • From the time we wake up to checking in at breakfast to not being one minute late for anything. We’re focusing on the discipline of things, and I’m loving it.

  • I know everybody now, but at the beginning, I tried to eat with someone else every morning and every night. We have assigned coaches for each meal to allow us to get meshed and know each other.

  • Coach Trooper Taylor is a character. He recruited me when I was at Bridgeland. We’ve had a good relationship for a while. He’s a Texas guy, and he’s a good guy.

  • My relationship with Collin Klein is really good. His family is not in town yet, so he’s at the facility all the time. We’re picking up on the offense. Spring ball is coming up fast, and I’m excited about it.

  • With one play and one variation of a play, you can run nine different things off of it, and it will look the same. The defense has to have their eyes in the right spot, or else they’re not going to get it.

  • I want to know everything about the offense that is possible to know. I want to make the game easier for me from a mental standpoint. Like Tom Brady, the game was so easy for him from a knowledge standpoint that he could play quickly. That’s where I want to go.

  • With my foot, I couldn’t do anything except try to learn the game. With Coach Klein coming in, I am being a sponge because he has a lot to say. I take as many notes as possible to try and get better.

  • It’s cool to have a relationship with Johnny Manziel for what he means to A&M fans. He was that guy. He was Johnny Football. He was the biggest guy on campus.

  • It’s about having a sense of urgency in everything we do. It’s time. Immature kids, it’s time to grow up. They know that. We’ve seen a lot of change in those kids, and it’s cool to see them growing up and maturing.

  • The new guys have acclimated quickly. With the breakfasts and dinners for meeting the guys, it got them up to speed quickly. With the freshmen, I like Izaiah Williams, and I like Cyrus Allen because he can fly.

  • Nic Scourton is a dude. He can move for his size. Desmond Ricks can fly, and he has good size for a corner. He’s going to be a problem.

  • Patrick Mahomes just rises to the occasion no matter what. It was his seventh or eighth year in the league, but he had his first road playoff game this year. There was nothing to it for him. He’s just Patrick Mahomes and rises to get the win.

  • CJ Stroud is going to be the next quarterback after Mahomes to win a Super Bowl. I am a big Texans fan.

  • Back in the day, football was more rigid with less of a game plan. You just had to be the biggest and strongest man to win. Now, it’s like chess, and you have the make the right moves and spend time in the film room.

  • The Lions were a tough team. Dan Campbell went for it on fourth down all year, so you can’t blame him for that. On that first one, I think you have to kick the field goal on that.

  • It’s football season. It’s rehab. I’m just getting my foot right at any chance I can.

  • No pressure on the first pitch, Billy. Mike Elko threw a strike. He’ll let you know about it too. Throw some warmup pitches first in the batting cages to get it right and get comfortable with it before you go out there.

Fantastic interview! It's nice getting to learn more about him and to hear about some methods the new staff is implementing to build this team.
