Headed to Paris! Joni Taylor named assistant for USA Olympic Team
From Aggieland to Paris.
On Tuesday, Texas A&M women’s basketball head coach Joni Taylor was named an assistant coach for the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s National Team.
Headed to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, this will be Taylor’s SIXTH assignment with USA Basketball.
Taylor will serve under head coach Cheryl Reeve of the Minnesota Lynx and alongside assistants Mike Thibault of the Washington Mystics and Duke’s Kara Lawson.
The United States is seeking its eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal and its 10th overall gold. The current American run of dominance dates back to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
In previous stints with USA Basketball, Taylor has captured gold medals as a head coach with the 2022 U18 and 2023 U19 squads. When representing her country as a head coach, Taylor is a perfect 13-0 and has defeated opponents by an average of 43.5 points.
Taylor is currently in her second season as the head coach at Texas A&M.
In 2023-2024, the Aggies currently sit at 5-5 in conference play following back-to-back victories over Ole Miss and Kentucky last week. With a 17-6 overall record, A&M previously strung together 10 straight wins in the non-conference to mark the program’s ninth double-digit win streak in history.
The winning mindset developed by Taylor with USA Basketball is beginning to take root in Aggieland.
Of course, Aggies everywhere will be rooting for her on the international stage this summer.
The 2024 Olympic Games begin on July 26, with the women’s five-on-five basketball competition beginning on July 27. The gold medal game is set for Aug. 11.
