Tyler Naquin awakes in A&M's win

Riding a wave of positive emotion after a three game sweep of Oklahoma State, Tyler Naquin led the Aggie offense on a 4-for-5 day with three runs scored in a 10-4 victory over Kansas. It was A&M's eighth straight victory and Naquin once again has the highest batting average in the conference at .383.

The old baseball adage that momentum is only as strong as the next starting pitcher scheduled against you was tested on Wednesday with Kansas throwing its ace. Matched up against Frank Duncan, a great pitcher with no run support and a losing record this year despite a 2.88 ERA, Naquin set the tone early. He singled in his first at bat, then gave the Aggies a lead when he sprinted home when Jacob House singled to right. Naquin singled and scored again in both the fifth and seventh innings when the Aggies broke the game open.

It’s hard to think that just two weeks ago, the hottest run by any Aggie hitter in the past 20 years was in jeopardy. The All-American was in a bona fide slump when he went hitless in the last two games of the San Diego Series. Naquin would see the streak reach 10 straight at-bats without a hit before he drove home two runs with a second-inning single against Texas State.

“I have had pretty much the same approach as before,” Naquin said after the victory. “I just tweaked a few things in the cages. You have to get in there and grind since it’s not something you can fix on the field. If you are out there and feeling terrible you have just go with what you have. I got in the cages with coach Andy Sawyers and I got back to normal. Feeling good (at the plate) was the main thing.”

The Aggies have won 70 of 110 games played since the beginning of his 26-game hitting streak in the 2011 season. Naquin has hit in 86 of those games and in 47 of those games he has collected more than one hit. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"left","Quote":"The Aggies have won 70 of 110 games played since the beginning of his 26-game hitting streak in the 2011 season. That approach may not look like a classic power hitter that is looking to pull ball after ball. Naquin’s ability to take a pitch to left and left-center, like his first three hits today, as well as powering through a ball that is in the middle of the plate, have scouts giving him a first round grade for the 2012 draft.

Naquin has hit in 86 of those games and in 47 of those games he has collected more than one hit. The consistency has been amazing; only four other times in the past two seasons has he failed to get a hit in consecutive games.

“I was really proud of our team today,” Aggie skipper Rob Childress said after the game. “We knew what kind of test we had with Frank Duncan and how good a pitcher he is. I felt like our big time players got big time hits today. Tyler Naquin, Scott Arthur and Jacob House, when it’s important and this time of the year it is, those guys all stepped forward."

I'm glad to hear that Naquin may be coming out of a slump at just the right time, but the player of the game was definitely Scott Arthur who ignited things in the 5th with an RBI triple and a 2-RBI single in the 7th.

IMHO
