Jim Schlossnagle emphasizes 'sense of urgency' moving forward

May 1, 2023

Texas A&M losing streak continued over the weekend as No. 7 Arkansas broke out the brooms to sweep the Aggies. On Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio, Jim Schlossnagle joined the show to break down the weekend in Fayetteville and look ahead with three SEC series remaining.

Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview

  • It's thin margins and also incredibly wide margins. You walk 14 guys in a game, and you still have a chance to win. In the middle game, we got our rear ends beat. In the third game, you had the debacle in the one inning. Getting swept can happen in this league, but we're down to three weekends, and we have to start playing well.
  • I try not to look at the records. I just try to win games. None of it matters, you just have to win. We’re in it, but we have a sense of urgency. Players know what is at stake. I don't have to sit them down and tell them. We just need to win a ballgame tomorrow night and start feeling better about ourselves.
  • When you strike out, most people look at the last pitch. There are pitches in at-bats though that you missed that you could have hit. We can’t be the team that needs the umpire to be perfect to win.
  • Max Kaufer really is turning a corner. We're trying to build his strength even though he's already a strong kid. We're really starting to get after it with him in the weight room. I thought Brandyn Garcia has been a real positive. You need to see back-to-back good outings for Chris Cortez. When we use Robert Hogan for a batter or two, he is very effective. There have been some positives in there.
  • Justin Lamkin will be the starter for tomorrow night vs. Tarleton State.
  • Nathan Dettmer has a little bursitis. He got a shot after the first inning and during the game. I don't think there is anything seriously wrong with him. The doctors just think it is a little inflammation. We will just take it day by day and see how he feels.
  • The guys who are leaders on the team aren't the most verbal all the time. Trevor Werner called that meeting behind the mound when he was pretty forceful, and then he did the same thing when we got into the dugout. After that happened, we started to play a little better.

Trevor was visibly upset when Minnich's throw wasn't cut. It was good to see his leadership show in the moment after that play.

I could not see Trevor on TV. Did see "Tke Kid" chewing up one side down the other!! I hope that is our starting point for the rest of the year. Win or go home mentality from here on out. GIG'EM AGS!!! BTOH EVERYBODY!!!!
