Mark French makes a case for Williams to be SEC Coach of the Year
Texas A&M's superb run through the SEC has caught the attention of many, and Buzz Williams has been thrown into the SEC Coach of the Year conversation. Mark French joined Friday's edition of TexAgs Radio to detail the Aggies' recent success and much more.
Key notes from Mark French interview
- Anytime the conference record gets in the range of 13-2, people will talk. Six in a row. Since Christmas, they are the sixth-best team in the country according to NET rankings. It’s high-level basketball. The best crowd I have seen at Reed Arena. They have captured some sort of magic. I’m excited about them maybe being able to grab a conference title. It’s a real possibility.
- I’m biased because I’m a big Buzz Williams supporter. Some people would say they started slower, but in the world of transfers, some things take time. He should be in the running for Coach of the Year. The way Nate Oats handled the situation with Brandon Miller, I wasn’t impressed by that. If they win these last three, Buzz will be Coach of the Year.
- The reality is if Alabama keeps winning, the more it will get talked about. The press conference could have been handled better. There has to be guard rails. It’s not our place to judge, and things will shake out. The SEC may be reluctant to give Coach of the Year to Oats. Miller is an unbelievable basketball player, and for his sake, I hope things shake out. There has to be a life lesson. It can't just be wrong place, wrong time.
- Wade Taylor IV is in the national scene which is cool because we have not had that in a while. He is fun to watch. He plays with a spirit that is contagious, and it rubs off on the other guys. I trust Wade. Imagine what year three has in store. He is the straw that stirs the drink. If you go back and watch, good Buzz teams always have a guard like that.
- Beyond anything, they make timely shots. They hit the dagger when there are crazy possessions. They are confident enough to where the defense can't pack the lane. They go at the rim hard, and that is something that will translate in the SEC Tournament and in late March.
- You will go over inbounds plays in shoot around. You have two or three different formations. Just get open. That’s the most effective way. It doesn't have to be schemed up perfectly. We have had a few hiccups though.
- If you get elite play from Wade and Tyrece ‘Boots’ Radford, you are looking at a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 team. Guard play gets you through March. You have one of the best guards in the conference.
- Personnel-wise, I like Mississippi State’s bigs. They are short in guard play. They have mid-major guards, and I think A&M can exploit that. We will have to contain their bigs. They are trying to make the tournament, and they are right on the bubble. I think we will be ready. We have to get this one.
