Back-to-back 17-point outbursts = SEC Player of the Week.

On Monday, the Southeastern Conference announced that Texas A&M junior forward Julius Marble II has been named the league’s Player of the Week following wins over Florida and LSU.

The Maroon & White were searching for a spark following an 8-5 record in non-conference play.

Marble has provided that spark.

In the conference opener at Florida on Wednesday, Marble was a force, posting a season-high in the Aggies’ 66-63 victory over the Gators. Joining both Tyrece Radford and Wade Taylor IV with 17, Marble finished 8-of-14 from the field and reeled in six boards in Gainesville.

The Dallas native offered an encore performance on Saturday night at Reed Arena against LSU.

Looking to ride its defense to yet another conference win, the Aggies forced 15 Tiger turnovers and controlled the glass, 38-27.

“Over Christmas break, we took some time off, and when we came back, we had to regroup, and a lot of what we talked about was defense and making sure that we were executing what we had been talking about on film,” Marble said.

More surprising was A&M’s dominance in the paint, outscoring LSU in the lane 42-10.

“We have been practicing this, and we have been using the pads against one another. If we can make these shots during practice, then surely we can make them in the game,” Marble said. “It is good to see that come to life because it is definitely something that we work on.”

Marble matched his season-high 17 points and came just one rebound shy of a double-double in the Aggies’ 69-56 lashing of LSU.

A transfer from Michigan State, this is the first time Marble has received player of the week honors from either the Big Ten or the SEC.

In 15 games for Texas A&M that includes 10 starts, Marble is averaging 8.9 PPG and 4.6 RPG.

Marble will look to continue his impressive run of form on Wednesday when the Aggies host Missouri at Reed Arena for a 7:30 p.m. CT conference clash.

The way he is playing he will likely continue to be fouled a lot and needs to improve his free throw shooting %.
IMO he takes the ball back too far behind his head with his motion making it difficult to have a consistent stroke.

Emerging leader on a team that will see several of our role players become leaders. Great to see it.
