During Tuesday morning's edition of TexAgs Radio, Aggie Track & Field head coach Pat Henry joined for the Track & Field Report to go in-depth on his team's performances from the past week.

Key notes from Pat Henry Interview

  • We had a good weekend in Florida. We sent one group to Mt. SAC in California. That was our distance people, and Eric Casarez went with that group of about 10. We had about 30 go to Gainesville.

  • The highlight was Charokee Young in the 400m, running 49.87. That's a world-leading time right now, and it's not an early part of the season. All of the pros are running, so for her to be leading the world is very impressive. The fastest Athing Mu ran in college was 49.57, which tells you what kind of season Charokee is having.

  • Athing is doing well. She had some good competitions. It's early in her season, but things are picking up as well.

  • We had a lot of people get better. Bryce Foster got better in both the shot put and the discus. He threw over 61-feet in the shot put, so he's getting a little bit better. It's all about everything happening sequentially for him, and he's getting much, much better all of the time. He has some practice puts that are significantly better.

  • If you continue to get a little bit better each week, that's what we're trying to do. If you make a big jump, that's not a physical improvement. That's a mental improvement.

  • We have the best conference in the country. You can go to this conference meet and be sixth through eighth in the conference but still have a chance to win at the NCAAs. There isn't a single event in this conference that isn't among the best in the country.

  • Kaylah Robinson is one of our only seniors in the group, but she's getting much better right now. It's all about consistency. We've had a lot of good hurdlers at Texas A&M, but for her to hold the school record is a huge honor.

  • Deborah Acquah continues to jump over 22 feet. Anybody who knows anything about track, if you're consistently over 22 feet, you're going to be competitive anywhere you go. Deborah is one that has really grabbed on to the consistency.

  • Avi’Tal Wilson-Perteete is just starting to make things happen. It wasn't the best of races, but you saw some good things inside that race. If she puts some things together, she's going to run 2.00 or 2.01.

  • On the men's side, we had four guys run 45 seconds this weekend, and it has been a long time since I've had four men run 45 seconds in the 400m at the same time.

  • Nobody cares what you did last week. It's about what you do this week. We have team rankings and individual rankings, but you have to do it on that day. You have to do it at the conference meet, at the NCAAs and then the NCAA Championships. You have to perform at the one time that it matters. That's the fun of the whole thing.

  • As a coach, you work all along, and it's a lot of rehearsals for that one play. We're really close to that play right now.

  • The Baylor meet should be a good meet. About 15 schools will be there. It's not too far, and they have a nice facility up there.

  • I thought Sam Whitmarsh could contribute right away, but he has had a lot of setbacks this season. He has had some physical setbacks that have been unusual, but he has worked through them. We got to Florida, and the airline had burned up his bag. It was just a mess. Everything has happened to this kid, but he has done very well.

  • Like any athlete, you have to trust your training and trust what you've been doing as progressive. Your brain has to continue to be progressive. You have to be positive about what you're doing and put the two together. In most cases, you'll be successful.

  • We'll probably take 30-35 athletes on both sides to Baylor this weekend. The proximity allows that to happen, and it's a bus ride up. We compete on Friday, and then we'll come home. The biggest part of the group will go back up on Saturday. It'll be a quicker meet on Saturday.

  • Jaevin Reed got probably the top award of the BCAs, and she has been a blessing. She's a great young lady, on and off the track. She's smiling and has a positive attitude all of the time. She's very, very deserving.

  • You can see how tough this conference is. Everybody has to have their best day on the dame day. That's extremely difficult, but we'll see if we can do it. We have some people that are big contributors right now. We have young javelin throwers that are both freshmen that are among the top in the country right now.
