Snubbed: Texas A&M inexplicably left out of NCAA Tournament field of 68

March Madness had a different meaning for angry Aggies on Sunday night.

Despite a brilliant late-season surge, Texas A&M was denied an at-large berth in the NCAA basketball tournament.

The NCAA Selection Committee was apparently unimpressed that A&M (23-12) advanced to the Southeastern Conference postseason tournament final.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
Auburn, who A&M defeated on Friday, is a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies hoped to earn the SEC automatic qualifying bid in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. But playing in their fourth game and four days, they fell to No. 9 Tennessee (26-7) in the championship game by a score of 65-50.

That loss ended a seven-game winning streak, which included SEC tournament victories over Florida, No. 4 Auburn and No. 15 Arkansas.

Despite its late-season resurgence, the Aggies will likely settle for a place in the consolation National Invitational Tournament.

That’s a major disappointment for the Aggies, who apparently could not shake off the residue of an eight-game losing streak that stretched from mid-January to mid-February.

The Aggies started Southeastern Conference play 4-0 but then lost eight games in a row. They were 15-10 and 4-8 in SEC play following a 75-58 loss at then-No. 1 Auburn on Feb. 12.

But A&M rebounded to win five of the last six regular-season games, including wins over Florida and then-No. 25 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The Aggies entered the SEC Tournament as an eighth seed and were expected by many observers to be eliminated in their first game.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
Arkansas, who the Aggies thrashed on Saturday, is a #4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Instead, Hassan Diarra hit a last-second 3-pointer in overtime to lift A&M over ninth-seeded Florida 83-80.

The next day, they stunned top-seed Auburn, 67-62, behind Tyrece Radford, Quenton Jackson and Henry Coleman III, who combined for 52 points.

The Aggies then blew out No. 15 Arkansas, 82-64, to advance into the SEC Tournament final against No. 9 Tennessee.

Several “bracketologists” had dismissed A&M as an NCAA Tournament participant until the victory over Auburn. Some even doubted the Aggies after the victory over Arkansas.

Stunningly, the Selection Committee agreed.

Best conference in the country and they take it to the wire playing 4 days in a row, losing the first 4 mins of todays game winning the rest of it. NCAA is a crock of crap and way misplaced the Ags in this one. Helluva finish to a challenging year that unfortunately the selection committee chose to ignore.

Looks like decisions were made pre-conference tournaments.

Not a hard decision on who gets in the dance when you have an 8 game losing streak in the middle of the season. Not surprised with the NCAA decision.

Not sure if that's what your suggesting but the margin of our loss today didn't have anything to do with us not making it.

We shouldn't have put ourselves in this position. No one is going to give us the benefit of the doubt.

We have to be consistent.

As an LSU fan I have to say this is one of the most ridiculous decisions I can recall by the Tournament Selection Committee. After all the Will Wade BS over the last couple of years I am fed up with Basketball and would have gladly seen LSU left out and A&M get in.

How does a team which beat Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Auburn while winning 8 of it's last 10 games get left out and a 19 win Bama who you beat and lost to Vanderbilt get in? Ridiculous.

This is worst than getting placed in the Tax Slayer Bowl in the Fall. The AD better start earning his money and start doing a better job lobbying for our athletic program. He is not here to make sure that our equestrian program is solid.

This has nothing to do with it. They decided pre conference tourney. Not about the steak but regular season.

Same vibes as being left out of the Cfb playoffs. It was all pre-planned. The committee is there for show.

I am truly shocked by the Aggies getting left out. How does a 17-14 Michigan team make it ahead of A&M and how does Notre Dame make it ahead of A&M. We beat them. Fans of college basketball want to see teams that are hot and committee apparently totally disregarded that fact.

4th team out is wild. They had no plans to let us in and it's obvious there wasn't a voice in the room supporting our boys. Our resume was too complex for smooth brained morons.

I 100% believe they earned their way to a play in game. Vehemently disagree with the decision. That being said, don't leave it to chance next year. Beat teams like South Carolina and Mizzou at home. Don't let it slip away against TCU, Kentucky and LSU. Win the SEC tournament championship game. It's bull**** they didn't get a play in game but next season their fate will be in their own hands from game 1 on. Take the decision away come this time next year and don't leave any doubt at all.

why even play a post-season tourney if a somewhat bubble team playing their best ball of the season beats 2 ranked teams & yet still not make it on over a few other P5 teams that limped home at the end of the regular season despite less overall season & conference wins?

Losses worse than these didn't seem to hurt other teams that got in. This was simply lazy work on the par of the committee. They should be ashamed.

You know, that's a stupid argument. Why does the order how we win or lose mean anything. If anything it shows how great we did righting the ship.

How many teams in the country could beat Fla, Aub and Ark in 3 days. Maybe 15 at most?

The other stupid argument was the margin today. Within reason, that is irrelevant. 15 isn't some horrific blowout. We gambled on 3 s late and were over aggressive defensively. Whatever. Tenn was in control for sure, but doesn't throw us out of the tourney.

Fraud and deceit is why we aren't in the tournament.

We are the ones being hurt the most from the blowback of the t.u. and OU SEC conference expansion. Now nobody in NCAA leadership positions want football playoff expansion nor too many SEC teams in the basketball tournament.
