Key notes from Charean Williams interview

  • The Super Bowl was awesome. It was a really good week. The weather was perfect in Los Angeles. People were actually complaining about the heat, and it was really hot. In Downtown LA, there was no breeze. We spent the weekend in Marina Del Rey, and it was wonderful near the beach. The stadium is absolutely beautiful, and it's unbelievable how nice it is. I did see there was one flaw, but they got it fixed: They didn't show very good replays because the TVs in the press box were on the video board feed. They got it changed to the network feed. If you get a chance to go to a game there, I highly recommend going to SoFi Stadium.

  • I think the Bengals are built for better success than the Rams long-term. Look at Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase and how young they are. You think they will have time to get back to this game, but think about Dan Marino. He got there in his second year and never got back. Think about how close Cincinnati's games were and how things had to go right for them. It's not easy to get there.

  • We know the Rams' problems and all the contracts they'll have to renegotiate this year. They can keep Von Miller if they want to. What I worry about long-term is not having those draft picks, which they gave up to go all in.

  • It's not that easy to come out of the AFC. We saw the Chiefs talking about how they would become a dynasty, and they didn't get back this year. It's very tough to get to the Super Bowl.

  • It's exciting to see Aggies having success. I listened to Von's press conferences all week, and he starts with "Howdy" and ends with "Gig 'Em." You couldn't ask for better representation than Von Miller. He is a great ambassador for the university, and I think he will be the next Aggie to go into the Hall of Fame and join Yale Lary. It's good when you can turn on a championship game and can watch Aggies compete for championships. It's really cool.

  • History says the Rams and Bengals won't be back next year because of how hard it is to repeat. Next year, it's hard to look past Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes. They've been in the AFC Championship Game every single year, but I think Josh Allen and the Bills will get it done. That will be my pick next year in the AFC. In the NFC, a lot depends on what happens with Aaron Rodgers. I'd go with the Packers if they have Rodgers. Again, we're talking about the teams with the best quarterbacks, and that's what it takes. If the Packers don't have Rodgers, you won't like their chances nearly as much as if they have him.

  • Many people are saying they're betting on the Cardinals to win it all next year because they're hosting the Super Bowl next season after the last two champions have been teams playing in their home stadium. The situation with Kyler Murray scares me, and I don't know who will be their quarterback next season.

  • I think the Chiefs are OK. I think Patrick Mahomes is happy there. A lot of quarterbacks want some say in personnel, and I get it. They're paid like CEOs. A lot of times, that's what it comes down to. I don't know what Murray's beef is with Arizona, and it might come down to a contract. The Cardinals have two more years on his contract. In the offseason, you hear about these things. Last year, it was Russell Wilson. There will be some quarterback movement this offseason because these guys see they have a chance to go somewhere else and win it like Tom Brady did. The Rams saw they could change quarterbacks and still get it done with a different guy. This is a recent development in the NFL where we've seen big-time quarterbacks change teams. I think it's going to become a trend.

  • I hold The Battalion dear to my heart. That's where I learned more on-the-job experience than in the classroom while I was at Texas A&M. It was the best learning ground that any journalist could have. I'm glad that President Banks has since made a change and realized why the print product is doable. They're not losing any money, and it's all based on advertising money. The print product is very important to journalism. We have a chance to make this a really good major with the journalism department and this working committee, and I hope we can make it a world-class department at Texas A&M.
