Former LSU quarterback Max Johnson has announced that he will transfer to Texas A&M. His decision comes after a Dec. 7 announcement that Johnson was entering the transfer portal. The quarterback will arrive on campus in January.

After one season as the starter at LSU, Johnson is expected to compete with Haynes King and incoming freshman Conner Weigman‍ as he is immediately eligible due to the one-time transfer rule. A&M’s Zach Calzada entered the transfer portal in mid-December after starting the Aggies’ final 10 games of 2021.

Johnson’s last game as the signal-caller in Baton Rouge was a comeback victory in which he threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jaray Jenkins with just 20 seconds remaining to beat the Aggies, 27-24. He finished the contest 22-of-38 for 305 passing yards and three touchdowns as Johnson now crosses the Sabine River to join the very same Aggies.

In two seasons at LSU under Ed Orgeron, Johnson appeared in 18 games. As a freshman in 2020, he split time with TJ Finley before ultimately winning the starting job late in the season. Johnson started all 12 games for the Tigers as a sophomore in 2021. He finishes his LSU career with 3,884 yards with 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Very seldom a runner, Johnson has rushed for just 78 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons.

Johnson brings an NFL pedigree to Aggieland as his father, Brad, won Super Bowl XXXVII as the starting quarterback of Tampa Bay. Originally from Athens (GA) and an Oconee County High School product, Johnson is the nephew of former Georgia and Miami head coach, Mark Richt. Max’s younger brother, Jake Johnson‍, signed with Texas A&M on Wednesday.

As a high school prospect in the class of 2020, Max ultimately chose LSU over offers from Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Tennessee and others. The Aggies signed King out of Longview (TX) in the same cycle.
