Tyree Johnson named SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week
Another one.
Texas A&M defensive Tyree Johnson was named SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week following a two-sack performance vs. South Carolina on Saturday night. Johnson shares the honor with Sam Williams of Ole Miss.
This is the second time Johnson has been honored as a standout along the defensive front as he was named Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week following Texas A&M's 41-38 upset over then-No. 1 Alabama in Week Six.
Johnson made his presence felt in the 44-14 win, recording two tackles, both of which were sacks of South Carolina's Zeb Noland.
His first sack came in midway through the second quarter with the Gamecocks facing third-and-8 at their 27. Johnson brought down Noland for a loss of six, forcing another of many South Carolina punts on the night.
Early in the third quarter, Johnson again got into the Gamecock backfield, sacking Noland for a loss of six on third-and-11.
While his numbers weren't gaudy, Johnson affected the game on a number of plays, wreaking havoc off the edge. The senior from Washington D.C. has blossomed into much more than a third-down specialist.
Johnson was hobbled with an apparent injury late in the dominating win and was wearing a walking boot during the postgame press conference that was described as "precautionary." Head coach Jimbo Fisher said postgame that he expects Johnson will be fine.
The Aggies' bye week comes at the perfect time for Johnson, who can hopefully rest up and prepare to disrupt offense down the stretch.
