UConn big man Javonte Brown-Ferguson will transfer to Texas A&M

The Texas Aggie basketball team added a mid-term transfer this evening as University of Connecticut 7-foot, 250-pound freshman post Javonte Brown-Ferguson‍ (also goes by Javonte Brown) announced his intention to attend Texas A&M and play for Buzz Williams.

A consensus four-star prospect and a top-125 national recruit according to 247 Sports in the 2019 class, Brown is an extremely long, athletic prospect with a huge ceiling. Some analysts have compared him to a young Robert Williams in stature and athletic ability.

His initial college decision came down to Connecticut, Texas A&M, and Kansas, and the Huskies came out on top in November 2019. Brown was a high priority for Buzz Williams and the A&M staff at the time, so the Aggies eagerly welcomed him into the program when he hit the transfer portal last week.

Brown had seen limited playing time in two games this winter with Connecticut. The Toronto native graduated high school a year early and didn’t turn 18 until this past fall. He also grew another inch in 2020, so his frame is still thin and immature. Brown has not been counted on to deliver production immediately this season.

However, his primary recruiting coach left UConn in August for a coaching position at Indiana, and that precipitated the eventual decision to transfer at mid-term. 

The transfer of Brown combined with the recent commitment of South Plains forward Jevonnie Scott‍ and the three high school signees from November puts next year’s scholarship player total at 13. Barring any offseason attrition, the program is finished recruiting for the 2021-2022 season. It should also be noted that there will not be a senior on next year’s team.
