Three of North Carolina's top players opt out of Orange Bowl

Three of No. 13 North Carolina's most productive football players will not compete against No. 5 Texas A&M (8-1) in the Orange Bowl.

Receiver Dyami Brown, running back Michael Carter and linebacker Chazz Surratt on Monday announced they would opt out of the game to begin preparing for the NFL draft.

Those are significant losses for the Tar Heels (8-3).

Brown, a junior, led North Carolina with 55 catches for 1,099 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Carter, a senior, leads Carolina with 1,245 rushing yards and has scored 9 touchdowns. However, the Tar Heels still have junior running back Javonte Williams, who has rushed for 1,140 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Surratt, a senior, leads North Carolina with 91 tackles and is tied with linebacker Tomon Fox for the team lead with 6 sacks.

Why would you quit, i.e. opt-out of a NY6 bowl game that is only 12 days away?!?!?!????

Can't get hurt in the ACC Championship game. Can only get injured in meaningless bowl games.

Do they still get a swag bag?

This is my top reason why we need to expand the playoffs. The 4 team playoff has ruined bowl season

True. The major bowls should not be reduced to "consolation prizes" . Which is what the Orange Bowl is to us this year. That is not the bowl's fault or ours, it is what it is. The major bowls need to be built into a "stair-step" playoff system every year, so they have real meaning every year.

I agree that the 4 team playoff system is broken everyone know ND and OH got in because of their name alone and both are going to I hope get severely spanked by their opponents. If I was the AD I'd call up both Nick and Dabo and push for no mercy, run up the score and totally embarrass the opposition. I think they should expand to 6 or 8 teams for the playoff, or make the bowl games mean something other wise in a few years if things stay the same and other teams are not given an chance I for see them breaking off and having their own playoffs and Championship like some of the broadcasters are predicting.

Look at those WOOSIE NC players opting out. They scared that they will be embarrassed, have their NFL draft stock hurt because they would not be able to do much against our defense, get injured or all 3. I also agree that the NFL is helping to ruin college football. This allowing players to opt out of a bowl game to prepare for the NFL to me is just selfish, especially a NY 6 game I can understand if you were playing in the Porta John Bowl maybe opting out but I would still play give those NFL teams another look at me. yeah I know its a good payday but still should have loyalty to your school and teammates and play till the bitter or sweet end.

My message to Fisher and the team would be No one OPT out, Play hard, play clean, play lights out, no mercy, send a clear message to ND, OH, and The Committee that you did not belong in the play offs and you made a mistake. I would tell as many players that can utilize that extra year of eligibility to come back next year and continue to use that anger and seek vengeance for this year because with a blow out of NC by us, a blow out of ND and Ohio will give us a Hight preseason ranking and with several key players on the top 4 teams most likely moving on to the NFL it give us a much better shot at winning the whole thing in 2021.

NEW RULE FOR ALL COLLEGES: You don't play the full season, including bowl, you pay back your scholarship for that year.

There should be a consequence for players who sit out their last game.

Part of their NFL salary should be garnished back to the university, equal to 3x the value of their last year athletic scholarship. I say 3x instead of 1x just to make it a bit more harsh. Players opting out of games is unacceptable when they got 4-5 years of free eduction and coaching.

Bowl games outside the playoff are scrimmages

They mean absolutely nothing. Win by 50, lose by 50.. does not matter one bit.

By this logic, no other late season game matters unless you're in the top running of your conference. Then, as teams are eliminated from winning, none of those remaining games matter.

Respectfully, this seems contrary to the ideals of competitiveness and love of the game.

Most guys will play, some will not. Next man up. I disagree with the notion these games don't matter. You're playing in a great venue , against a theoretically equally matched team, usually from a conf/region outside your own. I think they are great games, many fans agree or we wouldn't be having the discussion. The players who attend care as well. Finish your season with a W.

On the question of playoff expansion, I'm on board with 8 and no more. 8 allows the 5 major conf champs to get in plus 3 coveted at-large picks. I think this would be a great format and would preserve the importance of the regular season.
