Miami (FL) defensive end Donell Harris chooses Texas A&M
It’s a big day for Jimbo Fisher, Mike Elko and company as Texas A&M has landed a verbal commitment from one of the top defenders in all of America in Miami (FL) DE Donell Harris. Not only an elite level prospect, Harris is also one of the more unique stories in this entire 2020 recruiting cycle.
A long-time Miami Hurricane commit, Harris announced in June that he was stepping away from his hometown pledge and re-opening his recruitment. It was on that same day that he also made it known that he would be reclassifying to the class of 2020 from the class of 2021. Harris is such a well rounded, top-flight prospect that the step up in classification did little to hurt his overall stock.
Harris formed a strong bond in College Station with defensive line coaches Terry Price and Elijah Robinson, but what really got the Aggies’ momentum going was the role of defensive analyst Ish Aristide, a south Florida native who was able to communicate the culture and vision of Jimbo Fisher to Harris’ party. A&M also got a helping hand from current defensive lineman Derrick Hunter, who Fisher and company plucked out of Ft Myers (FL) in the class of 2019.
Harris certainly checks all the boxes when looking for elite talent to disrupt offensive gameplans on the edge. At 6-4, 220 pounds, there’s plenty for Jerry Schmidt to work with from a body/frame perspective. He’s got a great wingspan as well. Perhaps what jumps out the most, though, when you turn on the tape is his explosiveness. The kid has got next-level get-off and bend. He also finishes plays with power and arrives with bad intentions. You can view his senior mid-season tape below.
Donell chose A&M over offers from just about everybody in America – Alabama, Auburn, Miami, Georgia, LSU, Florida...the list goes on and on. He becomes A&M’s 20th commit in the 2020 class and sixth on the defensive line.
