Rob Childress discusses improvement at the plate, starting SEC play with Vandy
Key notes from Rob Childress interview
- Gonzaga took the momentum from the start on Friday night. John Dokaxis didn't have his best stuff, but fought to give us four innings, but they scored again late to pull away a bit more. We gave them a bit of a scare in the ninth, but couldn't get that big hit to produce some Olsen Magic.
- Doxakis never consistently landed a second pitch on Friday night and that was a very detrimental to him on Friday. You're not going to get swings from a good team if you can't establish that second pitch.
- On Saturday, we talked about coming back from that loss for the first time on the weekend. We needed to get the win on Saturday afternoon to set us up for a chance to win the series on Sunday. Asa did a great job on the mound to get through six, we played great defense, and offensively kept the pressure on them all day. Probably our best all-around performance of the season.
- Christian Roa suffocated them with strikes early on Sunday. But we had a rested bullpen and used the entire group of guys to get us through that game. Roa is one of the best teammates on our roster. He is always ready to do what is best for our team. He just needs to continue to be aggressive every time we give him the ball. That's when he's at his best.
- At the plate, we are getting more confident. We hit .333 last week with an OBP over .400. That's more in line of what we thought we were capable as a team. Ty Coleman has been great as a Freshman. He just goes out there and try to put his bat on the ball with a real simple swing.
- Bryce Blaum will be in the lineup tonight, he's feeling a lot better. DBU is a very good team, great at the plate and likes to hit the ball out of the ballpark. We'll start Chandler Jozwiak tonight and he's got a tough test ahead of him.
- Vanderbilt brings some power arms into town this weekend. Maybe not the best pitchers, but they'll throw it hard. A great lineup, one of the best hitting lineups in the SEC. It'll be a tough test for us this weekend.
- We think we should be 18-0, had a couple of slip ups along the way. We need to continue to get better day in and day out. I think we need to find a our Sunday starter. I'm not going to necessarily save Christian Roa for Sunday's every week. If I need to use him to get outs earlier in the weekend, we will. Then we'll throw one of the other talented lefties.
