Trayveon Williams declares for NFL Draft after record-breaking season
Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams, who set an A&M single-season rushing record on in the Aggies’ 52-13 Gator Bowl win, announced that he would forgo his senior season to enter the NFL draft.
A junior from Houston’s C.E. King High School, Williams earned All-American acclaim this season after rushing for 1,524 yards and 15 touchdowns in the regular season. It was his second 1,000-yard season in his three-year A&M career.
Williams broke the school record on a blinding 93-yard touchdown run against NC State. He also set a new Gator Bowl rushing record and finished his MVP performance with 236 yards and 3 touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 1,760 yards and 18 touchdowns.
As a freshman in 2016 Williams rushed for 1,057 yards and 8 touchdowns. He opened the 2017 season with a 203-yard rushing performance against UCLA, but sprained an ankle the next week and finished the year with 798 yards and 8 touchdowns.
This season Williams thrived as the feature back in coach Jimbo Fisher’s offense, which was aided by a tight end and a fullback.
Williams averaged just over 12 carries per game in his first two seasons. But he proved able to handle a bigger workload in Fisher’s system and averaged 21 carries per game.
He accumulated the impressive 2018 numbers despite facing six opponents that ranked among the nation’s Top 40 in rushing defense.
Williams rushed for at least 100 yards in eight games this season and twice exceeded 200 yards.
He had a strong November in which he rushed for 700 yards in four games. That included 107 yards against Auburn, 228 against Ole Miss, 167 against UAB and 198 against LSU.
Williams entered the Gator Bowl clash with North Carolina State needing 169 rushing yards to break the A&M-single season rushing record of 1,692 yards set by Darren Lewis in 1988.
