Texas A&M to add Missouri tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley to staff

Joe Jon Finley, who has served as Missouri’s tight ends coach since 2016, will accept the same position at Texas A&M according to Billy Liucci. Finley, 33, will replace Tim Brewster, who left the A&M staff last week to accept a similar position at North Carolina.

The addition of Finley gives the Aggies a young coach who has already proven capable of developing tight ends and has experience recruiting Texas.

A former All-Big 12 tight end at Oklahoma, Finley helped develop Missouri sophomore Albert Okwuegbunam, an All-SEC tight end in 2017 and a 2018 Mackey Award finalist. This year Obwuegbunam has 43 receptions for 466 yards and six touchdowns. Last season Obwuebunam had 29 catches for 415 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In 2017, Missouri’s tight ends combined for 15 touchdowns, which was the most in the nation for that position group.

Also, in 2016, Finley’s first season as Missouri’s tight ends coach, senior Sean Culkin had a career-high 24 catches for 282 yards.

Finley, who played high school football at Arlington for his father, played professional football from 2008 until 2011. He was on NFL rosters with the San Francisco 49ers in 2008-10 and the Detroit Lions in 2011.

He began his coaching career in 2011 as offensive line coach at Los Fresnos High School in the Rio Grande Valley. After taking one more shot at the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, Finley joined Oklahoma as a graduate assist in 2012-13. He returned to Los Frensos as offensive line and strength and conditioning coach in 2014.

The next season he joined Baylor as offensive quality control specialist and helped with tight ends.

Finley and his wife, Caylee, have a daughter, Blakely, and a son, Knox.

Sounds like he has ties to the Valley, as well as Dallas I'm sure if he worked with OU.

His dad was our coach in Cleburne and he's coached everywhere. He should have good connections.

I played for his Dad in Cuero. He was a good ball player in high school. I tried to follow him a little bit after his Dad took the job in Arlington. Switched from QB to tight end. His older brother Clint played for Nebraska and was a great high school player. Comes from a football family. Should be a good hire to the staff.

He's a very good teacher and gets a lot out of the position. Unlike a lot of coaches, he's actually played the position and understands the nuances of running routes, etc. Instant cred with kids from his beast TE days at OU. Played in league. This hire is a win, win.

Seems like we got a coach that can also recruit as opposed to a recruiter that may or may not be able to coach. I'm happy

There are only 64 Power 5 programs and with Jimbo, Woodward, and full commitment from the BMAs we are easily a Top 5-10 job and rising. There's no reason why every coach we hire shouldn't be a true triple threat (player development, recruiting, and tactical in-game smarts).
