Johnny Manziel traded to Montreal Alouettes, will play for Mike Sherman

Heisman winner and former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is on the move once again.

Though he joined the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats just two months ago, Manziel has been traded to the Montreal Alouettes, a team coached by a familiar face to the Aggie legend and the 12th Man in general: Mike Sherman.

Manziel, who redshirted during Sherman's final season with the Aggies, has been a backup quarterback in Hamilton since returning to football earlier this year but should have a chance to compete for a starting spot in Montreal as the Alouettes (1-4) have scored more than 20 points just once in five games this season.

Sherman was head coach at Texas A&M for four seasons from 2008-'11 and helped recruit Manziel to Texas A&M. He posted a 25-25 record while in Aggieland and was fired just before Manziel's break-out 2012 campaign.

Though his tenure ended on a sour note, Sherman did much to bring the Aggie football program out of the doldrums of the early 2000s and stocked a talented roster that paid massive dividends during Texas A&M's first year in the Southeastern Conference.

Now reunited in Montreal, Manziel and Sherman will attempt to institute the same kind of turnaround with the Alouettes. Together this time.

The addition of Manziel comes after Alouettes starting quarterback Drew Willy left Saturday's 25-8 loss to the Calgary Stampeders with a hand injury. Willy was replaced by backup Matt Shiltz. Montreal was already without quarterback Jeff Mathews for four to six weeks because of a foot injury.

Manziel will try to improve an offense that ranks last in the league in points scored and rushing yards, is tied for last in turnovers, and is seventh of nine teams in passing yards. The Alouettes are 1-4 and in last place in the CFL's four-team East Division. Their next game is Thursday, when they host the Edmonton Eskimos.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Montreal had wanted Manziel for a while. The Alouettes had wanted dibs on Manziel, but Hamilton had declined to trade his rights. Montreal had called Hamilton multiple times about doing a deal.

The Tiger-Cats relented after seeing Jeremiah Masoli get off to a solid start. And it helps that Montreal gave up starting defensive end Jamaal Westerman, starting receiver Chris Williams, and first-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. (Hamilton also included offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice in the package.)

For Manziel's part, he didn't push for a trade, opting instead for patience. The patience has now paid off.

Given the quality of the Montreal team, that could be a good news/bad news proposition for Manziel. Either way, #ComebackSZN has gotten a boost and all those folks who bought No. 2 Tiger-Cats jerseys may be looking for refunds.

To be fair, Johnny also played fast and lose with the ball. Sumlin was also fully planning on starting Showers until August 2012. The difference was Johnny getting with George Whitfield and making better decisions with the ball during fall camp.

Just pointing out that this is a reconciliation of two ships that just about passed each other in the night, on purpose. Johnny also had committed to Oregon because no one in Texas was showing love.

This is not a reconciliation of a partnership that worked all that well the first time around.

Well at least I understood what a Tiger-cat is. Like a canadian tiger. An odd and smallish, rather polite cross between an actual tiger and a cat. But an Alouette? Is that a french spelling of a small, British toilet? A-lou-ette?
