Trio of Texas A&M baseball players earn summer honors
Three Texas A&M baseball players are being recognized this summer: Sophomore starting pitcher Chandler Jozwiak was selected to the Texas Collegiate League All-Star Team and pitcher John Doxakis and shortstop Braden Shewmake were named to the USA Collegiate Team.
Jozwiak, who is playing for the Brazos Valley Bombers this summer, has posted a 1-1 record with a 2.30 ERA thus far. In his first year in Aggieland, the Brenham high school product started nine games for A&M and pitched 42 innings in 19 appearances, recording a 4.50 ERA with a 2-0 record.
“It’s all about hard work paying off, coming from A&M and that run we had, you have to work on the things you’re set out to do, and having that opportunity is what what means most,” Jozwiak said.
Jozwiak is shutting things down for the rest of the summer to keep from going over his summer innings limit. He is looking to get bigger and wants to work on his slider coming into the instructional fall league.
“Going into Division 1 baseball straight from high school, you can't take yourself too seriously, especially in a conference like the SEC. You just have to work with what you’re given and I’m truly thankful to be where I am,” Jozwiak said
Braden Shewmake and John Doxakis are now with the the Collegiate National Team battling with Japan, Chinese Taipei and Cuba. Doxakis had plans to play for the Bombers until the he got the call to join Shewmake on the 26-man national team roster.
Doxakis was stellar in his first appearance, dominating Chinese Taipei as he fanned three batters, retiring nine of the ten he faced over three innings. He first started to raise eyebrows when he struck out the side in an inning of work against the US 18U National Team during an intersquad game in June.
Shewmake, making his second appearance on the Collegiate National team after being selected in 2017, has played in eight games this summer including seven starts. He’s hitting .130 (3 for 23) with six walks and one HBP, posting a .333 OBP. He also has two runs and two stolen bases.
Shewmake, Doxakis and Team USA will continue their series with the Japanese Collegiate All-Star Team July 6-8 featuring stops at Minor League and Coastal League parks, including Savannah, GA (July 6), Charleston, SC (July 7), and Macon, GA (July 8). The USA Collegiate National team will then travel to Havana, Cuba to close out the summer league July 10-14 with games scheduled to be played at the historic Estadio Latinoamericano.
First pitch of game three of five against Japan is Friday July 6 at 7:05 ET and can be streamed live on USAbaseball.com.
