Armani Watts chosen by Kansas City in NFL Draft's fourth round
Safety Armani Watts made an immediate impact at Texas A&M. He’ll hope to do the same for the Kansas City Chiefs
Watts was chosen by the Chiefs on Saturday in the fourth round of the National Football League draft, No. 124 overall. It’s the third consecutive year an A&M player was a fourth round selection.
Last year receiver Josh Reynolds was a fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams. Two years ago punter Drew Kaser was taken in the fourth round by the then-San Diego Chargers.
Though slightly undersized, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Watts, enjoyed an excellent career at A&M in which he earned All-American recognition as a senior and developed a knack for making big plays.
That knack was demonstrated right away. He started as a true freshman in a 52-28 season-opening upset victory over South Carolina in which he had an interception and made a big hit in the end zone to force an incompletion on the final play of the first half.
Watts recorded 327 tackles, 10 interceptions, 19 passes broken up and six forced fumbles in his stellar career. He had interceptions in overtime to clinch victories over Tennessee in 2016 and Arkansas in 2017.
However, his single greatest performance was in 2015 against Ole Miss in which he recorded a career-high 20 tackles, had an interception and forced a fumble in a 23-3 loss.
The Chiefs are hoping for similar production. The Chiefs need help in pass defense. Kansas City ranked 29th in pass defense last season.
