The No. 9 Aggies took on UT-Arlington in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday night, dropping the game to the Mavericks in extra innings 5-1 at Olsen Field

In the top of the 18th inning, RJ Williams singled to left field and then crossed the plate after a fielding error by Baine Schoenvogel. Zac Cook would notch another run for UTA after dropping an RBI single into right field. Cook would later score after Omar Salinas hit an RBI single up the middle. After loading the bases in the same inning, UTA added two more runs as Josh Minjarez reached on a fielder’s choice; two of his teammates would score after two fielding errors by A&M.

The Aggies scored for the first time in the bottom of the 18th inning after Chandler Morris drew a walk. A single by Zach Deloach and a balk would allow Morris to cross home plate.

Freshman southpaw Chandler Jozwiak got the nod for the Aggies on the mound. Jozwiak tossed four innings while striking out five, without giving up a run. He gave way to a tandem of relievers — Nolan Hoffman tossed a scoreless inning and two thirds and was followed by Kaylor Chafin who blanked the Mavericks for two-thirds of an inning. Cason Sherod followed suit by pitching 5.2 innings without surrendering a run before he handed the ball off to Asa Lacy. Lacy pitched 4.2 scoreless innings but was lifted in the 17th after his pitch count hit 70.

Jason Ruffcorn replaced Lacy, and was saddled with the loss after allowing a runner to reach base to start the 18th. Kyle Richardson gave up two unearned runs, the first of which came as Noah Vaughan hit a line drive to right field that got past Baine Schoenvogel and rolled all the way to the wall. Dustin Saenz relieved Richardson after an RBI single — giving up two more unearned runs before Mason Cole would finish off the 18th inning.

For the Mavericks, Carlos Tavera got the start and threw 4.1 innings without a runner crossing the plate. Tavera gave way to four relievers, who blanked A&M for 13.2 innings.

The Aggies will return to the diamond Friday night when they open SEC play against Auburn in a weekend series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network +.

The title of this article is a little underwhelming. Yeah it was extra innings, but come on...they played 2 games and only got credit for one.

As usual with these type of games with great pitching, he who makes the most mistakes loses.

Let's hope it was pitching. Everyone besides Helman looked AWFUL at the plate against an average UTA team

This weekend will tell us a lot more about this team's hitting and pitching. It's big boy time from here on out.
