Boomer White gives his thoughts on the 2018 Aggie baseball team
Key notes from Boomer White interview
- Not getting ready for baseball season as a player has not been that big of a deal. When people bring it up, and I think about it, then it will hit me sometimes. I miss certain aspects of it, I am a huge sports guy in general, and I love and appreciate sports. I miss the feeling of competition and responding to failure. The heat of the battle, and doing it for the guys. It hasn’t been to the point where I am just craving to get back in. I knew when I made the decision to step away from playing baseball I would be looking forward to my next stage of life.
- What truly stands out to me is that our A&M baseball team is going to have a lot of different ways they can win games. I know in the past we have been able to put our thumb on something, like young talent or returning veterans. But you can’t really find an area of this baseball team that you think is going to be struggling. The back-end of the bullpen, we got it. Starters, veterans, they are there. We've got junior college guys to come in, freshman who can make a big impact and we have a leader behind the plate named Cole Bedford. We have a younger guy, Hunter Coleman who people are saying might be the best hitter on the team. The strides he is making are even more substantial than you may believe. When you see all these ways we will be able to play and matchup, it is exciting to know if one part may not be there, we will have things to fall back on.
- Logan Foster knows when he gets the bat on the ball things happen that most people can’t do. That is just something Coach Bolt has hammered to him. He is as talented as any guy, but that talent is useless if you are chasing balls that no one can hit. They know he is going to have an impact, he is an athletic guy in the outfield and he can change the game.
- Braden Shewmake is already filling out. You can tell he is more mature in the way he walks throughout the dugout and walks up to the plate. He has always had a little swagger to him. He knows what he is capable of and it is going to be really exciting.
- Zach DeLoach playing at center field and leading off in the SEC is a lot of pressure for a true freshman. Since day one he showed maturity at the plate, maturity not of a freshman but of someone who can carry on that load and if he is able to, watch out.
- Stephen Kolek is a Friday guy. I haven’t seen exactly what his velocity is, that’s not everything, but it helps to have some real power there that can really throw up a zero through five or six innings. I know Stephen turned into a heck of a pitcher last season and learned how to get out of jams when he didn’t have his best stuff. That speaks volumes on a kid, but if he can couple that with some velocity and powerful stuff then yes, he can be our Friday guy. The talent and power is definitely there.
