Alex Caruso signs two-year, two-way deal with Los Angeles Lakers

As already noted this summer, former Texas A&M point guard, ball boy and all-around basketball sensation Alex Caruso arrived onto the NBA scene with his impressive showing on the Los Angeles Lakers' summer league team.

Caruso's conversations with the Lakers about a two-way contract have been in the works for a few weeks. After seeing his performance in the first few games, the Lakers decided not to wait any longer and offered him a two-year, two-way deal to stay with the organization. This was first reported by Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, and confirmed by TexAgs.

Caruso's sudden rise with LA began a few nights ago when he started in place of the injured Lakers first-round draft pick, Lonzo Ball on Tuesday. In the game, Caruso filled the stat sheet compiling 18 points to go along with nine assists and four steals.

Including the ultimate Caruso hustle play, a steal at one end leading to an alley-oop slam at the other.

The contract signed by Caruso will be a two-way contract. This will give the Lakers the ability to bring Caruso up to the NBA team for a period of 45 days from their new G-League team, the South Bay Lakers. If you want to read more about two-way contracts, here's a good run down.

The Lakers and Caruso are not finished for the summer in Vegas; they will play the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the Vegas Summer League playoffs tonight at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

UPDATE: The Lakers have made it official.

He could have signed for up to an allowed max of $275,000 on that contract. Maybe that performance earlier this week helped him get a few more bucks. Regardless, he'll be making significantly more money playing hoops the next 12 months than he did the last 12.

$75K-275K

Hopefully his agent made the right call. This contract keeps Caruso away from other teams for two years on the cheap...which I believe is the Lakers' primary purpose. Caruso is just a good outside shot at being a starter at the NBA level at PG/combo guard.

Can Caruso play at the NBA level for more than 45 games? Is it 45 games consecutively or total?

The agent could always renegotiate...but in a year I think Alex could sign a hard $ and larger NBA deal.

Regardless, amazing progress! Congrats.

He's max two-way G salary and has opportunity during callup to earn up to the 275k based on prorated NBA minimum. He is right now on the Lakers 17-man roster. He can move from the two-way into one of the 15 non-two-way slots which requires ripping up his two-way in order to replace it.

As a roster member he's tradable, too. And unlike a regular G leaguer he isn't callable by other teams. The Lakers have committed to Alex.

ESPN Basketball Analogy podcast guys in Las Vegas summer league talking a couple of seconds about Alex at the very beginning. Link above.

"I wrote one piece on Alex Caruso, since he stole the show."

"He plays hard as hell that dude".

"I feel bad for that guy [though]"

"Oh, the hair?"

"The hair...oh..."

"It's not great"

"It's brutal, he needs some of that Australian shampoo"

"Nah, he needs to just shave it. and embrace it. Shave and embrace".
