The Aggie softball team was set to take on Prairie View A&M and Georgetown in day two of the Texas A&M Invite, but Mother Nature had other plans. The Aggies looked to Sunday for their chance at back-to-back wins against Georgetown and UTSA.
Despite the problematic weather and rain delays the teams faced, all of the games were completed. The Aggies, however, only needed five innings of play against the Georgetown Hoyas and six innings against the UTSA Roadrunners to clinch two wins on the day.
Samantha Show started the meeting against the Georgetown Hoyas impeccably. After a 1-2-3 top of the 1st, the Aggie offense had a chance to make its presence known. Tori Vidales and Kaitlyn Alderink drew two back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the 1st, bringing Ashley Walters to the plate. Walters slugged a three-run shot to center field, and the Aggies took the lead early.
Sarah Hudek and Kelbi Fortenberry drew another pair of consecutive walks to start the bottom of the second, but Hudek was tagged out at third base on a fielder's choice. Another walk loaded the bases for the Aggies, with Ashley Walters due up. Walters singled to right field, but after an error by the Hoya second baseman, the home team tacked on three more runs and increased the lead to 6-0.
The Hoya defense gave up another easy run after walking Kelbi Fortenberry with three runners on base. Anna Brooks Pacha hit Tori Vidales on a wild pitch, scoring Miles and ending the ball game after 5 innings due to the 8 run-rule.
A mere thirty minutes later, Lexi Smith and the rest of the Aggie defense took the field against the UTSA Roadrunners.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Sarah Hudek doubled to center field, followed by another double to center by Kelbi Fortenberry. Hudek scored on the hit and got a run on the board for the Ags.
The Roadrunners put up a few hits in the top of the fourth, but the Aggie defense held the score at 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Riley Sartain hammered the ball out to right field for her fourth home run of the season and expanded the Aggie lead to 3-0.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ashley Walters doubled to center field to score Tori Vidales and Erica Russell to put the Ags up, 5-0.
The momentum carried over into the 6th inning. Kristen Cuyos stepped up to the plate and knocked one out of the park for her second home run of the weekend, tacking two more runs on the board for the home team. Kaitlyn Alderink singled out to right field, scoring Hudek and ending the game after a quick six innings, 8-0.
The Aggies will travel to Huntsville on Wednesday, March 8th to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats for their final non-conference game before SEC play begins. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
