Key quotes from Corbin Martin interview

“Weather wise, playing in Alaska and the Cape Cod league were the exact same.  You couldn’t ask for better weather at all, sunny and 75 degrees every day.  It is hard to break a sweat in that kind of weather.  Every day is a grind up there because of the baseball talent.  I think it helped me focus more playing in every game against the best of the best, and it also helps when you are playing in the best weather in the country.”

“Every guy that showed up to play for Falmouth was ready to go and win, so that was the main goal of the summer.  Being around a bunch of guys that always want to win helps it become more of a process in making the playoffs and the long run.  Some of those guys up there I know in the Cape just want to go home and get some rest, but every guy on our team was willing to stay more days and win, so it was awesome.”

“I brought my glasses up there just in case, but my allergies didn’t get bad up there so I didn’t have to use them.”

“The spring was very difficult not being able to throw strikes, I was frustrated in myself.  I didn’t give myself a chance to throw late in the year even though I was given chances early, so not taking advantages of those opportunities really bothered me, so this summer I really had to focus on throwing strikes.  That was the biggest key to this summer was to just pound the strike zone.”

“At the end of the day it is not about myself or yourself on a team, it is a team deal.  I looked at that and said, 'I have to be a good teammate and no matter if I was pitching or I wasn’t pitching, the guy who is at the plate, on the mound, making the plays, I always have to pick up because it is not just me that helps the team win, it is everyone.' That was the main thing that I saw and thought about that would help me.”

“I think my success this summer was more of a focus thing, just believing in myself and not getting frustrated if I threw one ball.  I felt like back here this year, if I fell behind it got in my head that I wasn’t going to be able to throw a strike.  Once I got in the Cape I realized that if I got behind, even if I did throw a strike, to trust the defense behind me to make a play instead of trying to strike everyone out like I tried to do here.  That was the biggest key this summer.”

“I would say I could see a change after my first couple of appearances in the Cape.  When I was in control of the game every time I went in there I realized that I had something good going here, so once that clicked, I rode with it all summer.”

“People said that I hit 100 on the gun and that is what the board said, so I will go off of that.  But if not, it is still cool to be able to hit those digits that I haven’t been able to hit before.  At our field we have a radar gun connected to the press box, so the pitchers can’t see it but the dugout and the fans can see it. I heard all of the fans go crazy and the team go crazy.  It would be nice and all to hit 100, but at the end of the day if it didn’t hit 100 it is still alright.”

“That day I felt the best I had felt all summer.  It was in the playoffs so it was a  win or go home situation, so I was really locked in that day.  I knew my arm felt good so it did feel really good coming out of my hand.”

“If I could put it all together this year, it would mean the world to me because I feel like these last two years I have really let the team down.  Just not really being a part of it on the field, but being able to be a part of it in the dugout has helped me.  But being able to put it all together and get on the field to lead our team would be an unreal feeling for this university.”

“It would be nice to start again, but at the end of the day I am not going to complain about where I pitch. If where I fit is in our rotation or the middle I am going to do whatever I can do to help the team win.  Coach and I have talked about me maybe being a closer.  It is not a for sure thing, but we are going to test some games out this year and if I can throw strikes as a starter that would be awesome, but if not I will be waiting to be the next Mark Ecker of Andrew Vinson.”

“I am very confident in the 2017 team.  Our coaches do a great job with everyone and even though we lost a lot of guys and captains on our team, I think we are going to do a really good job of turning things around.  Some people would say it is a rebuilding year, but to me it is just another year at Texas A&M.”
