Aggie Baseball finishes regular season ranked No. 1 by multiple polls

Last season, Texas A&M anticipated a low national seed after a strong season, only to be stunned by TCU's selection instead.

This time around, there won't be any doubt.

The question will simply be about whether the Aggies could be the top overall seed.

A&M, which finished 20-10 in SEC play to earn the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, lost just one series all season (to longtime No. 1 Florida), swept eventual SEC champ Mississippi State, no-hit a top-10 Vanderbilt team, took two of three on the road from South Carolina and ended the regular season at No. 4 in the RPI.

And, on Monday, the Aggies supplanted the Gators as the nation's No. 1 in team in the final regular season D1Baseball and Baseball America polls — with the USA Today and NCBWA yet to be released.

A&M took two of three from No. 7 Ole Miss over the weekend, while Florida dropped its season-ending series to LSU. The Gators fell to No. 4; No. 2 Miami and No. 3 Mississippi State followed the Aggies, who will carry their lofty top billing into the SEC tourney.

Per the D1B staff:

Texas A&M returned to No. 1 in the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings for the first time since Week Six (March 28), which was the Aggies’ only previous week at the top this season. The Aggies, who lost just one series all season, finished their regular-season slate with three straight marquee series wins vs. Vanderbilt, at South Carolina and vs. Ole Miss.

A&M finished a game behind SEC regular-season champion Mississippi State in the standings, but the Aggies swept the Bulldogs in Starkville, which makes up for the one-game difference in the standings (particularly since SEC schedules are unbalanced).

No. 8 LSU, No. 9 South Carolina, No. 10 Vanderbilt and No. 11 Ole Miss joined the Aggies, Bulldogs and Gators to give the SEC seven of the top 11 teams in the D1B poll. Yes, literally half of the conference is in the nation's top 11 teams.

On that note, the SEC Tournament is set to begin in Hoover, Ala. on Tuesday. As the third-seeded team, A&M will receive a first-round bye and begin play on Wednesday against the winner of Vanderbilt and Missouri.
