Brandon Williams, Drew Kaser add to Texas A&M's 2016 NFL draftees
Cornerback Brandon Williams on Friday night and punter Drew Kaser on Saturday joined first round selection Germain Ifedi as Texas A&M players taken in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Williams was taken in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals. Kaser was picked in the sixth round by the San Diego Chargers, where he’ll be reunited with kicker Josh Lambo, a former A&M teammate.
Williams, who transferred to A&M from Oklahoma in 2012 as a running back, shifted to cornerback last season because Defensive Coordinator John Chavis thought Williams had the physical tools to excel there.
Chavis turned out to be a prophet.
In his first season at cornerback, Williams posted 37 tackles and broke up seven passes. After the season he was recipient of the prestigious Aggie Heart Award, which was voted on by teammates.
“Brandon always puts the team first and he has a bright, bright future in the NFL,” Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin said in a release from the A&M Sports Information Department. “I couldn’t be prouder of him and we wish him well as he takes this next step.”
Kaser, an All-American and Ray Guy Award finalist, averaged 46 yards per punt during his A&M career — which exceeded the 44.7-yard career average of Shane Lechler, one of the greatest punters in NFL history.
