COLLEGE STATION - All victories are nice. Any time a team walks off the field with a win instead of a loss is a positive experience. Some wins, however, are more special than others.

The Texas A&M baseball team got one of the rarer variety on Saturday.

On a beautiful day for baseball, the Aggies got their 20th straight victory to start the 2015 season and the program's 1,000th win on the hallowed dirt of Olsen Field. Behind a stellar start from pitcher Matt Kent and an offensive showcase, the Ags defeated the Auburn Tigers 10-4.

While Kent's total body of work on Saturday was outstanding, his first inning was anything but good. The junior lefty gave up four hits and two runs before getting his first three outs, and it looked like it would be a short appearance.

Kent didn't back down, however, and settled in nicely on the mound for the next seven innings. The pitcher allowed only three hits from the beginning of the second to the end of the eighth, making the big pitches when it counted most.

All told, Kent pitched 8.1 innings, the longest outing by any Aggie pitcher this year, and gave up 4 runs on 10 hits with 7 strikeouts and no walks.

Closer Corbin Martin came in to get the last two outs of the evening, giving Kent his fifth win of the year.

Kent went through his early struggles and strategy after the game.

"They had a great approach early in the game," he said. He went on to say, "Throughout the game I was really good inside on (right-handed hitters) and away to (left-handed hitters), really trying to keep them off-balance as much as I could."

As has been the case for most of the year, the Aggie hitters didn't let the man on the mound hog all of the spotlight. Though the bats were quiet through the first three innings, Texas A&M ended up displaying the firepower that has propelled them to a perfect 20-0 record.

G.R. Hinsley led the charge in the fourth inning, singling to right field with the bases loaded and plating Logan Taylor. Blake Allemand, the next man up, followed suit with his own single into right to tie the game. The Aggies would go on to score another run in the fourth, taking the lead for good.

Three more runs scored in the fifth, aided by a pinch-hit double down the third base line by J.B. Moss. With a commanding 6-2 lead and a pitcher that had found his groove, the boys in maroon and white cruised to a landmark victory.

Though they didn't score in the sixth, the Ags tacked on four more runs in the seventh and eighth, hitting double-digits in hits and runs once again. Ronnie Gideon, who went 2 for 3 in the game, loves the hitting depth on the team.

"This is a great team to be part of," he said "Everybody up and down the line-up -- even the guys out of the line-up -- it's fantastic. Everyone's got dedication to win, heart to win. Without that, I don't think we would be able to do what we did."

With the 10-4 victory, Texas A&M moved to 2-0 in SEC play and clinched the series against the Tigers.

Head Coach Rob Childress reflected on the milestone win.

"Pretty special to be a part of, and that's what we told our guys," he said. "I mean, we'll all be long gone by the time there are 2,000 wins. To be a part of that and the history of the amazing baseball, the coaches, the players (and) the staff members that have gone before us is pretty special."

The Aggies will begin the second leg of their journey to that 2,000th win on Sunday. They'll try for the sweep over Auburn at 1:00 PM.

Despite seeing his ERA rise, it was a great outing by Matt Kent! And hopefully a return to form by Ronnie Gideon.
