Bruce Pearl lauds A&M for honoring Anthony Mason

Not present at Texas A&M's Saturday night blowout of Auburn was Tigers guard Antoine Mason — the team's second-leading scorer — who did not make the trip. He was instead in New York, with his father Anthony, who died earlier in the day.

The Aggies took notice.

Then, so did Bruce Pearl.

A&M held a moment of silence at the game in honor of Anthony Mason. The Aggie equipment staff also embroidered black ribbons on Auburn's jerseys in support of the Mason family.

"I want to thank the Texas A&M administration and the basketball program for a really first-class gesture before the game," an emotional Pearl said. "That really was very, very kind, very, very thoughtful, and it meant a lot to us. And it really kind of makes me proud that Texas A&M is part of the SEC family, because that was what family does.

"The other thing their equipment staff did was they got these pins for us, and they embroidered them on our players’ jerseys. We had the jerseys in the locker room this afternoon and they went in and got everything, they took care of everything.

"That’s just, those are the kind of stories you don’t hear in sports when teams are competing like that. That’s pretty special, and it meant a lot to our team."

I liked the fact that the announcer did not mention "former NBA player". What's most important is that he was Antoine's father.

Thanks for that really nice gesture. It was a show of true compassion and sportsmanship, especially the sewing of the ribbons on our jerseys.

Sad for the loss but what a classy response.
I support my Aggies 100% win or lose, without complaint and without reservation.

Kennedy has this program going in the right direction. Aggie basketball handled this sad situation with an incredible act of sympathy. Hats off to everyone involved.

I wouldn't expect any less from an organization run by Coach Billy Kennedy. He exemplifies class and is an amazing roll model. Such a sad thing for that player to lose his dad at such a young age.
