Softball: Florida's five home runs lead to a 17-4 pounding of A&M
RECORDS: Florida 39-8, 10-7; Texas A&M 29-16, 9-11
COLLEGE STATION – Ouch.
There’s really nothing else you can say other than ‘Ouch’.
On Saturday’s second game of this SEC series, the 5th ranked Florida Gators trounced the 21st ranked Texas A&M Aggies 17-3. It was the Aggies third straight Saturday loss by run-rule, all which came against SEC opponents. This also guarantees a series loss, as they dropped last night’s game, as well.
There were a total of eight home runs hit in this game, five by the Gators, and three by the Aggies. The eight total home runs today were the most hit in an SEC game this season. All eight home runs were hit by different players. Florida’s came early and often, three within the first two innings, one of which was a grand slam. All of A&M’s came later and didn’t produce the mass amount of runs that Florida’s did.
The Gators came out firing. The leadoff hitter, Kelsey Stewart, singled to center to begin the game. The next hitter, Kirsti Merritt, homered, and the Gators never lost that lead. Instead, they expanded on it. Heavily.
The bleeding could not be stopped in the second inning. There were eleven (11!) runs scored by the Gators. There were two home runs hit, one by Florida’s eighth batter and one by Florida’s ninth batter. There were three pitching changes by the Aggies with Kristen Davenport replacing Abby Donnell who replaced Katie Marks. Lastly, there was one grand slam, which put the game way, way out of reach.
There were some bright spots for the Aggies. Taran Tyler at shortstop made some very nice plays in the field, keeping some more runs off the board. Nicole Morgan, Jenna Stark and Cassie Tysarczyk all homered in today’s game. Tysarczyk’s and Stark’s both came late in the game, and hopefully will bring some momentum into an early start tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, the series wraps up with a noon start
at the Aggie Softball Complex. It is demoralizing to get swept at home in
conference play. The Aggies hope to avoid that fate tomorrow.
