Rough Saturday Ags… you can always count on Aggie Volleyball to be there for you. Back to another ranked match today and this one is on the road at #20 Creighton. The Aggies will look to pick up their second win of the week after sweeping SFA on Tuesday. Let's get this winning streak going Ags!
With some time off and extra time to prep for Creighton, the Aggies will be rested and locked in looking to continue building momentum before conference play begins next Sunday. 5 losses isn't ideal, but with our strength of schedule we will be given grace. It's imperative we pick up these next two wins.
We dismantled SFA on Tuesday quite easily. Gabi Rodriguez had herself a heck of a match and Kirra was distributing the ball well. We were able to go on multiple big runs thanks to great serving and great defense leading us to even get to see some of our bench. Five Aggies had over 5 kills and we had more than double their kills and provided 6 aces.
Creighton will be a step up, however their play in recent outings has left many doubting their program and questioning what's going on. They began the season beating Purdue and USC on national television. But, they would then lose to Tulsa at home before heading to Rice and losing matches to Louisville and even Rice. They'd then get swept badly by Nebraska on Wednesday and even lose 3-1 to Kansas State 2 days ago. Unsure of when Creighton last had a 4 game losing streak, but let's make it 5.
Creighton seems to have one very strong option at the pin, in the uber talented Wisconsin transfer Trinity Shadd-Ceres. Maybe one of the most athletic players in the country, she can jump out of the roof and when set at the net, she is extremely difficult to defend. However their setting situation is what seems to worry Creighton fans. They run inconsistently switched between a 5-1, a 6-2, and a 5-1 by rotating between 3 setters. They brought in Kansas transfer Katie Dalton who is their best setter and stands at 6'1 and have another senior setter Rayna Christianson who's 6'2, while their freshman setter Ivy Lueck is only 5'6. They did run a 5-1 last match with Dalton. I suspect they start with her, but will switch to a 6-2 at some point. They have two quality middles in Ayden Ames and Eloise Brandewie, but with inconsistent setting and passing it's hard to get the middles involved offensively.
We'll need our block to show up on the road, but more importantly I hope we see some quality serving. That's an area I think we are absolutely improving on. Stowers and Ring have been improving at that area and are providing tough serves. Gabi Rodriguez has shown her ability behind the service line as has Musgrove. Tough serving will really challenge this Creighton squad.
Creighton is struggling, however they have the talent. They will be hungry to flip their season back around at home. The Aggies will need to respond and just play volleyball the way they are capable of. Tough serving, a balanced offense, a strong block, and some great passing and serve receive. I said it right after the SFA match, that a winning streak has begun. A win over Creighton can really spearhead a strong run. Rice comes to our place Tuesday to start a 4 game home stand that sees South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi State come to College Station to begin SEC play. Let's get this win streak going and dominate Creighton.
