Our quality was so clear over SFA.

If Hernandez isn't careful she may find herself in the regular rotation.
To me it looks like our team has a long way to go still if they want to be competitive in the SEC. We just seemed to have way too much trouble putting the ball away vs. SFA. Granted, part of that was due to the great defensive effort of SFA. But we weren't often hitting the ball on a "terminal" trajectory. I think Creighton is going to present a challenge.Joseydog said:

We are clearly behind Kentucky and Texas at this time . After that I don't see anyone else who right now we can't play and beat in the SEC. AND last year we were behind those two teams pretty much and we ended just fine. I have the upmost confidence in the coaching to move forward and get progressively better as the season goes on every year since Morrison got here.
We didn't learn much against SFA which I didn't expect to. We got some players in the matches that don't get much time.
Personally would have liked to see a 6-2 one set with Morris and Fitch on the RS hitting but other than that we did what we needed and got some court time for players. If Lacewell had suited up maybe get her some front row time but she wasn't.
Creighton will be a good match for us coming up. As will Rice next Tuesday at home.
We have to pass better collectively. Stowers and Applegate aren't passing in the form of last year at the end but once again we get better as we go and I know those two can pass really well.
Last year thru mid-season, we had many games where we were just sloppy. My comment was about our talent versus SFA. We have 5 new starters and Kyndal is working her way back into fitness. I expect that it will take more games into the season to gel. The talent is there though, despite our current record against top 10 teams.
I watched an Arkansas game this year (my daughter is the band so I was really just trying to see if they showed her. I need proof of life occasionally!) Arkansas appeared closer to SFA than to us talent-wise. Lots of other very talented teams in the SEC though.
I think a lot of folks are remembering how we ended the season last year and not the journey to get there - it wasn't all pretty. Go be back look at all the discourse on our service errors last September for example.
In conference I'm not convinced Florida or Tennessee have really closed the gap with us. We also play both at Reed, and Florida also lost their best player to Wisconsin. Vanderbilt may surprise some teams but won't be able to sustain their start.
Barring injuries I will be shocked if we aren't at least 12-3.

I haven't watched Florida at all this season. They've lost one of their best players to Wisc the last two seasons. Don't need them taking a spot in the SEC top 3 again.
Vandy seem to play with a chip on their shoulders which makes them competitive at times. Similar to SMU except SMU has way better players.

This can't be stated enough. We flipped a switch in the tourney and played at a completely different level than we had most of the season. Most of us spent the year thinking Sweet 16 and maybe Elite 8 with the right seed/draw (which we didn't get).
With the improvement already noticeable and a long season still ahead, I like where we are right now very similar to last year.
I don't think we were playing poorly during the regular season last year. We had a lot of sweeps in conference. We won our First Serve match but played a lot of pre-season scrubs until losing to SMU/TCU. We beat t.u. but lost to Kentucky.
I'd say we were pretty dominating. Both Lednicky and Stowers were chasing records and Waak had a very high number of assists.
That said, our defense was ho-hum outside of the blocking. For some reason, the last two season, the defense wasn't elite until the playoffs and all of a sudden, the entire team was elite.

After the Kentucky loss we played great. The road wins against ranked Florida and Tenn were dominant, and our regular season finale at home against Georgia (#6 in conference) was a bloodbath. I think we lead the league in sweeps.
It didn't just start in the playoffs, but they sure were at the top of their game by regionals.

I see this team improving in almost every area except one. We need to improve finishing points when we go to the pins.
Not sure why we are comparing this team to last years. Night and day where they are both starting the seasons.
