Hoping to get some advice/reassurance about my girlfriend's case. She's not vaxxed, 28, no known comorbidities.

She started feeling bad on Thursday night and then had a fever of around 101 on Friday and felt pretty awful but unfortunately not sure how much she rested (I was out of town). She was stressed with work stuff which did not help. Then Saturday morning it got pretty scary. Fever of 103.8. I'm on my way back in to town while this is happening so needless to say, my drive is very stressful. She's too weak to take the at home Covid test but thankfully after a few hours, and after taking Advil, it's down to 98.9. Huge relief. She tests positive and gets an online urgent care appointment. Doctor is definitely concerned about the temp but doesn't really offer up anything else (I assume because it came down rather quickly) except a list of supplements to take (C, D, zinc, etc.). I got my hands on ivermectin for her (in the boat of maybe it works, maybe not, but I'll do anything to help her) as well. It's now been 48 hours plus since and she's feeling pretty good. She's gone from Advil/Tylenol alternating every 4 hours to just Advil every 8 and the highest her fever has been since 103.8 is 100.7. Most of the time she's 98 something. Decent cough but nothing crazy. Definitely not a dry cough. O2 levels have been very very good. 98 or higher each time. She's in decent spirits and sounds and looks pretty well. Just gets tired.

If it wasn't for the extremely high fever, I'd be more relaxed, but I just can't shake the anxiety. Hoping to get thoughts on if anything more should be done/if the fever is still cause for concern even though it came down and stayed down.

TIA

The day after Christmas my 9-year-old daughter seem to be feeling fine but said she felt warm. Took her temperature with a gun thermometer and it came up the exact same, 103.8. Totally freaked us out, took her temperature quite a bit over the next couple hours and while that thermometer is pretty inconsistent, it was always high in the 102s or 103s. At home covid test was positive.

Gave her tylenol, that brought it down in the middle of the night, next morning fever was gone and never came back. So not an adult obviously, but definitely spiked a high fever that came and went. No issues since.

Thanks for the response. Glad your daughter is doing well. I thought maybe it was a bad reading but she tested multiple times so unless the thermometer isn't the best, it was accurate.

My 3 yr old spiked a 104 fever for a small period of time with a positive test. We managed that down with Tylenol and it did not get back above 101 after that. She had the unfortunate experience of an ear infection and COVID at the same time.

Good to hear. Glad everything is well. Even though it's not exactly the same thing (kid vs adult), these responses are reassuring

High fever seems to be pretty prevalent with this strain, but if she doesn't break it in another day or so I would be calling the doctor for recommendations.

Want my advice? Forget it's COVID and treat it like any other illness. She's in a very low risk group for anything major to happen.

I'd worry more about a low pulse ox than a high fever. If pulse ox is good, take vitamin D, quercetin, Zinc, and DayQuil/NyQuil. It's what I did 3 weeks ago and had no issues.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like clots and lung issues have been the main Covid killers so I see a fever as just something that sucks but that you can manage with OTC meds or just let it ride if it's not too uncomfortable.

See if you can score some promethazine syrup. I honestly don't know why this isn't prescribed more. It's an anaesthetic, but if you take it with a little dextromorphan HBr, it will knock you out at night. Basically will work like codeine, but I guess it's hard to get that because it's an opioid. That nagging cough will keep you awake and keep you from healing.

Don't waste your time with Mucinex. The cough will likely be dry, and guaifenesin won't do any good.

They probably wouldn't give you hydrocodone either, but it would be more of a heavy hitter. Docs are pretty scared of that stuff, I guess. Theyd rather have you hallucinate from lack of sleep for a month than prescribe something you need that has an addiction risk. Of course, all bets are off if you're hospitalized. In there, you can stockpile a truckload.

Promethazine is a potent sedative. It can, in some situations, decrease cough reflex so dramatically you can actually cause a pneumonia. Especially if you add codeine to it or booze.

Remember that cough & fever are both natural responses to infection. They are helpful in preventing you from being overwhelmed and killed or we wouldn't trigger those responses when infected.

I would have 0 concerns about your 28 year old even with a 103 temp. That just means she has a great immune system and it is kicking viral butt.

Hundreds of millions of people have had covid and are completely fine.

Very very very few healthy 28 year olds have serious complications.

Also, a 103 fever, if I am not mistaken, in a child (for the 2 posters mentioning their kiddos) is a little different than one in an adult. Neither means there is trouble per say. But younger kids have warmer temps anyway. As the doctor said, a 103 fever with your girlfriend means things are actually working great. Obviously not fun. But a good thing overall considering the temp did not rise more.

Like I said, docs probably won't care if you can sleep at night. Promethazine is a big nothing burger. It's a mild sedative. Yeah, of course you wouldn't add codeine or alcohol to it.

But you can't get well if you can't sleep at night. 5 ml of promethazine will do the trick. Let the cough run wild during the day. At night, shut it down.

People will abuse Ambien and Tylenol. Might as well let them try promethazine. Sometimes you just have to know what to ask for when you go to the doctor.

Thanks for all the responses.

Agreed that the worry is worse than the disease in most cases (including this one). The high fever just threw me off. But it's now been almost 24 hours fever free without medication so things are definitely trending in the right direction.

Listen to your doctor, and this man OP.

I had covid recently, and ran a 102 fever for 2 days. Took tylenol one day, ibuprophen the next. And some D3. Tbh I enjoyed a nice long rest, and felt better by day 3. The cough & sore throat went away after about 7-10 days.

Datasets from the state I live in indicate I have a significantly higher risk by multiple orders of magnitude of being killed in a car crash, than I do from covid.

Therefore I threw the masks away, and make sure to keep my seat belt buckled.

I'm also unvaccinated, mainly due to how creepy some people have been about this stupid virus.

ETA: When I say creepy, I mean unsettling to the bones creepy.

You shouldn't even bother treating a fever under 102. It's one of the body's natural defense mechanisms.
A fever isn't even dangerous unless it's over 104.

That's fine for the granola, philosopher, deliver your baby in the bathtub crowd, but deliberately feeling like garbage for days so I can pat myself on the back and be one with nature isn't really my thing.

A fever due to infection isn't dangerous, period. Every year I see countless kids with temps >104F, they almost all do amazingly. I don't think I've ever even heard of a case where someone had a poor outcome solely due to a fever caused by a typically otherwise benign infection, outside of complex febrile seizures which have nothing to do with how high the fever is. For the rare few that don't do well, it is because of the underlying infection, and not the fever. What I care about is the cause of the fever. For an uncomplicated viral infection whose only symptom is fever and fatigue, I don't even bat an eye at 105F. Just get them some ibuprofen or Tylenol. Now if they have low O2 sats, or unable to tolerate liquids for a 24 hour period, those are things I get concerned about.

Running through my workplace like crazy. 25 tested + in the last week on a floor of approximately 50 people. Vaxed / unvaxed, pretty much the same story - High fever & head aches in most, a smaller amount have a cough. All have been 100% fine in 3 to 5 days. Those taking quercetin, NAC, vitamin D (thanks to Reveille & TexAgs), over it in 2 days or less with super mild symptoms. Those that add ivermectin to the mix (human version) asymptomatic, would not know they had a disease other than the fever.

Edited to say, I would not chase the ivermectin if you don't already have it....virus will be gone by the time you can get it, and 7 - 10 folks reported some trouble sleeping (while they had the fever), did not mention it earlier as one of the common symptoms.

Works best if you mix with sprite and put some jolly ranchers or life savers in it and drink it from a styrofoam cup.

Get her Quercetin, Zinc, Melatonin, Baby Aspirin, NAC, and Vitamin D. This should be sufficient for her. Drink lots of fluids as in her age group dehydration would be the most likely serious complication..
