COVID and Vertigo

I have been suffering from vertigo for the past couple months. I got Delta in August. I have never experienced vertigo before COVID. Since COVID I have had maybe 3-4 bouts of vertigo (basically one a month) but last night I had an episode so severe I almost vomited and basically went straight to bed. I woke up this morning and still have some lingering dizziness.

Should I see an ENT or a Neurologist?

I started at ENT but they sent me to have a head scan when it happened to me. Not Covid related

Thanks. I did Teladoc, they prescribed me some Meclizine and recommended seeing an ENT first if symptoms persist.

You need to go see a otologist/ neurologist that specializes in balance or meniers disease
I have had bad inner ear issues for two decades. Highly recommend Dr Kimper in Austin. He is one of the worlds best...literally.
He studied under Dr. Wesley Krueger. One of, if not the best otologist/ neurologist in the US. ( now retired).
My Doc told me they are seeing many hearing/ balance cases with folks who had Covid.... wether they had mild or severe cases.

Dill... don't waste your time and money going to an ENT. Get to the Otologist/Neurologist if you can.

Hopefully Kool sees this (he's an ENT). But sometimes people get something called labyrinthitis following a viral infection. It will sometimes go away on its own, but you may need a course of steroids to help it go away. May also be worth seeing a doctor in person so they can do some provocative tests on you to see if they can recreate the vertigo. You can also youtube the Epley Maneuver and try that on yourself. Could also consider a vestibular rehab specialist.

ETA: Yeah, what Gunny said too. An otologist/neurologist wouldn't be a bad choice either. Personally I would start small and go big. The epley maneuver, followed by a course of steroids perhaps.

Ive been suffering from daily symptoms of dizziness and vertigo symptoms for the past 8 months since I got the 2nd vaccine shot. Ginkgo Biloba helped a lot with the vertigo symptoms, Ivermectin as well. Ginkgo you can get at CVS or something, give it a try.

I'll resist commenting on the ivermectin...

But inner-ear problems have been documented as potential issues with "long COVID". A couple of studies have shown about a 15% incidence of vertigo, tinnitis, etc. in individuals who have experienced COVID infection. I don't know how that rate compares to other viruses. But as stated earlier, viral-related inner ear issues are known to occur.

I have COVID right now and developed some hearing issues on Sunday. Maybe it's coincidence. I don't know and don't really care. It's just annoying.

Although I never got tested, in my line of work and with the amount of people I've dealt with on a daily basis over the last 2 years, I'm pretty sure I had covid at least once in the middle of last year. I also just got over Covid in the week before Christmas (smell is slowly returning now).

I am 39 and have never had vertigo or tinnitus before. But in October after a trip to Disney world, I had a severe bout of vertigo that kept me home for 3 days. Teladoc prescribed me three or four different medicines, all of which dramatically help the symptoms quickly. I have not had another bout since, thankfully, but every once in awhile I notice a little bit of dizziness if I change positions or lay down quickly.

Pulsative tinnitus is what I self-diagnosed myself with after this latest bout with Covid. I would wake up every morning with the noticeable beat of my heart in my right ear. Lasted about a week or 2. Never have had that before in my life either. It has since gone away, but I have a feeling both of these things might be covid related. I only had the first vaccine shot, fwiw.

Do you remember what the 3 things you were prescribed were?

Promethazine and Meclizine were 2 of them. Dramamine night have been another?? And then an antibiotic. I just remember the doctor saying one was for the spinning effect, one was for the nausea, and the antibiotic was in case it was caused my a bacterial ear infection. (My ear had been occasionally hurting the week before the vertigo hit.

Honestly, the Epley maneuver and the Brandt-Daroff exercises probably helped the most. Found a couple good YouTube videos explaining them and they really worked. It immediately stopped my erratic eye movements when laying down.

Ok, I took Meclizine and that stuff worked ok but stayed in my system for 24 hours, super drowsy.

When I first got diagnosed with diabetes, I had really bad vertigo to where I could barely drive. I did those maneuvers to retrain my brain and after a few months I was mostly back to normal. I had never had any motion sickness problems ever before. Those crystals just let loose inside my ear and I couldn't handle it. I highly recommend those procedures because they really helped.

Yes, lasted for about 24 hours with meclizine and slowly faded out. Hasn't come back yet

Are you guys sure it isn't a random episode of BPPV? I have been plagued with random bouts of BPPV for several years now. It seems to come on when I am sleeping and quickly flip over which dislodges the small ear crystals in the inner ear. Its awful but I have been able to eliminate symptoms by performing the Epley and other related maneuvers to "reset" these dislodged crystals. Relief is almost instantaneous so its worth a shot even if they make symptoms a little worse when performing them. Note that these crystals will eventually dissolve after a few weeks and the symptoms subside. Perhaps something to consider.

Easy way to tell this is if the vertigo symptoms can be caused by certain positioning of the head.
