Just recently tested positive for COVID and walking pneumonia. Symptoms were brutal, Severe sore throat (pain 9/10), aches, fever, violent coughing. Doc put me on Azithromycin and all symptoms gone in about 12 hours and I feel great now.

I'm curious, is Azithromycin commonly used to treat COVID? I hadn't heard of it before as a treatment for COVID and was a bit skeptical but totally sold on it now.

Any physician or those in healthcare have any opinions on its use as a COVID treatment?

Antibiotic used to treat a secondary bacterial pneumonia infection.

It's an antibiotic that has no efficacy against COVID, but numerous physicians and NPs/PAs for some reason continue to prescribe it despite lack of evidence of a bacterial superinfection, although this has been an issue even prior to COVID of many physicians just throwing antibiotics at viral respiratory infections.

They aren't prescribing it for it's anti-bacterial properties. What an odd comment from a DR (soon to be?)

Been a year + but when my doctor prescribed it for a suspected case of COVID (along with a steroid) my understanding was that it helped control inflammation in the lungs. Wasn't prescribed for it's antibiotic properties. I was one of the few that had cardiac issues from it.

Neither he or my pulmonary doc prescribe it anymore for COVID, preferring another steroid combo.

That is actually exactly what most prescribe it for; however, for the few that are prescribing for its supposed "pleiotropic effects", this has largely been considered a myth by most infectious disease docs.

Yes, azithromycin does have anti-inflammatory effects. However compared with a course of steroids, the anti-inflammatory effects are minimal.

The problem with anecdotes like the OPs is that it doesn't account for the possibility that he would've felt just fine in 12 hours had he done nothing. Sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees, but that's the purpose of large scale randomized trials.

If OP actually had walking pneumonia, then azithromycin would help. However, many "docs" at your corner doc-in-a-box have poor radiology skills and/or frequently will feel the need to give patients a prescription for something so it feels like the doc did something for them, and so they'll get a repeat customer and good patient satisfaction scores/reviews. Whether that antibiotic is indicated, or not, I don't know without actually seeing the xray.

Thanks for all the responses. It's true I don't know if I would have gotten better without azithromycin, but the timing was impeccable as I was feeling worse by the hour until I took azithromycin, so it's easy o point to it as the cause, but the reality is i really don't know if I was at low point and my own body defenses really kicked in or were helped significantly by azithromycin.

Al I know is I'm glad to be past it as it was looking pretty grim for a while.

My uncle (52 yo) had Covid back in June. His doctor in Houston gave him Azithromycin. 5 days from starting the dose he lost almost all his hearing and developed severe Tinnitus. He ended up at an Otologist and now has very little of his hearing back. Otologist told him Azithromycin, along with other Mycin drugs are highly ototoxic ( makes you lose your hearing) to some folks. My uncle is in hell now with little hearing and screaming Tinnitus.
Can docs on here share in info?

Clinic doc prescribed Z pack and steroids for me and wife last Christmas when infected. Pretty sure all useless, but that was their protocol at that time and they followed it.

I quit taking the steroids after a few days as I could not sleep a wink. I'm pretty sure my case was going to be mild (if not short) based on my health, viral load, or whatever regardless of what I'd taken that was available at the time. If I'd taken HCQ or ivermectin I'd probably think it helped.

It'll be interesting in a few months to see the impacts of therapeutics actually designed for the disease rather than every doctor and regular Joe having to grab the "old reliables" out of the drawer whether that's a Z pack or ivermectin. None of that **** apparently really works to cure the disease, but clearly makes doctors and patients feel better because they're throwing something at it.

And I guess that's partly the point.
