The way I understand it, current vaccines have 1 spike protein as the "bait" for your immune system, where this soccer ball configuration has room for more than 1 spike protein (24, I guess?) So it turns out more like a combo vaccine they could attach different spikes to, including different variations.

A strained analogy...you can plug 2 appliances into most regular wall outlets. Or, you could plug in a multi-outlet power strip into a wall outlet and then plug in 6 or more appliances into that power strip. This "soccer ball" configuration is like a power strip they can plug multiple spike proteins into.

Will it protect against future variants? Once Omicron has passed, there will be another (and another and another) super variant that rattles the world.

No. It is protein structures attached to a Ferritin molecule. Pretty amazing and I hope it shows good efficacy and duration.

Yeah and that article states that is one of the problems with trying to get people for the new vaccine study- they can't have already been vaccinated or had COVID which is a pretty small subset of people.
