Another question is how and if they are checking for reinfections.

I think the better question is..... has anybody been severely sick twice? Has anyone been sicker the second time around?
no from my camp. everyone i've know to have it twice has been less severe.

but the powers that be haven't found a way to define what exactly meets the threshold of a reinfection.
Which is concerning to me…

Please see link New England Journal of Medicine study of 357 k people infected with COVID reinfection only 1304 and only 4 hospitalized once again far superior to vaccines

Little known fact: proximity to camels reduces the risk of Covid reinfection.

(j/k of course)

Actually, good on Qatar for such thorough collection of data.

Omicron is pretty clearly getting through all previous immunity to cause infection. South Africa had a relatively low vaccination and likely upwards of 70% infected. They had an explosion of cases with Omicron. London and NYC similar stories. Omicron is exploding there.

If immunity wanes for vaccination then it certainly wanes from infection as well. Anybody saying otherwise is lying to themselves. Everybody is going to catch this wave of infection with maybe the exception being people that very recently had COVID or a booster.

Any data pre Omicron is going to be irrelevant.

Omicron is not dangerous or deadly to anybody thus far vaccinated, unvaccinated, or prior infection just contagious.

The same was said about Delta. Everyone will get it! Well I know a ton of people who still haven't caught it. This appears to be a seasonal cycle like cold and flu season. We will go through these "deadly waves" twice a year - once in the Northern states and once in the Southern states.

It will never end. Vaccines or natural immunity will not end it due to variants. It is here forever.

I thought having COVID previously was a billion times better at protecting you than the vaccine? And that Omicron was just Omicold?

Just read an article that reinfections account for less than 1% of cases and I personally do not know anyone who has gotten it twice.

Has anyone on here gotten it twice?

One of my neighbors just tested positive yesterday. His second time to have COVID. Got it really early in the pandemic originally. His only symptom is a sore throat. He just sent me a picture of a ribeye he was grilling to cure his sore throat.

I don't understand people that think reinfection is impossible.

Some people have better immune systems than others so their defense might last different lengths of time. With the virus constantly mutating it seems like it could change enough over time to get past our defenses for a second round of Covid.

I'm a big believer in natural immunity and hate that our government has pretended it doesn't exist, but I don't see it is a defense against any and all future covid variants from now until the end of time. The best way through this is probably to get it and then get exposed every so often and maybe get a very mild case every few years to keep from ever getting it bad again.

Maybe with breakthrough vaccine cases but certainly not with reinfection of natural immunity.

John Hopkins has South Africa's total cases at 3,332,008 with estimated total population of 59.31 million people so likely still have a lot of exploding to do over there.

Why would natural immunity certainly wane like the vaccine?

I had it twice, as did my wife. Positive in January 2021, runny nose for a day and that's it. Vaccinated in April/May. Tested positive again in September after kids tested positive. Much worse for me the second time. High fever for 4 days, cough, abdominal pain, and loss of taste and smell for one month. Also worse for my wife the second time, but not much. She had same symptoms as me the first time and then second time had a long lasting cough and also lost taste and smell.

It's a virus. Yes, it's always possible to catch it again. Can you catch the flu multiple times. Yes. Also, vaccines for the flu do not prevent infections 100%. I've had the flu vaccine and then got the flu.

More important questions: Are reinfections causing a noticeable amount of serious illness that leads to hospitalization or do the majority of those reinfections end up much milder? If milder is the main result, than its a good thing and is more evidence to loosen mitigation etc. Also, the vaccine is being deemed useless b/c people can still get covid. But, is it not true that the vaccine actually limits severity greatly? And how does reinfection present with those naturally immune.

In the end, if people aren't dying or being hospitalized from covid reinfection, is this even an issue or story? B/c if we find reinfection leads to only a low level of potential hospitalization and/or death, say around what the flu normally has, than it shows that once enough have initially had a variant of covid, all of this can end (obviously I lead to ending all mitigation now)....People getting sick isn't the issue. It is hospitals being overrun. If millions get re-infected but hospitalization isn't required for most, problem solved.

WOW! Very interesting. Natural and vaccinated immunity with loss of taste and smell. You don't hear that very often. I'm glad y'all are ok now!

My coworker is out right now b/c she has covid. She is fully vaxxed and got covid this time last year. This will be her 2nd Christmas in a row that she'll miss.

This is someone that believes it's your right to get vaxxed or not. She also believes it's ok for all non-vaxxed to lose their job for not getting the vaccine.
