If you get a cold, should you avoid a COVID test?

Seems like the omicron variant is going to become the dominant one pretty quick. Since all evidence points to it being very mild, shouldn't we just stay home, call it a cold, and NOT get COVID tested?

Seems like if someone is healthy and vaccinated, the best path forward is to just rest, get plenty of fluids, and get over it - just like you would with a cold.

Yes. Unless you just want to know, then get a rapid at home test. I wouldn't get one that feeds to the government. Just adds to the fear.

I honestly think this is the way forward. If you feel bad enough and maybe want MAB treatment then do a rapid test but beyond that if mild just stay home and recover and assume it's a cold.

As a society we need to be better about limiting interaction with others when we are sick and likely increased work from home arrangements will encourage that. For example, my son had flu last week and I just worked from home all week. Nobody else in family got sick but we played it safe. Especially with holidays.

This…I feel no need to get a covid test, rapid, slow or otherwise. If I feel sick I stay home and have no desire to know if my ailment comes attached to a Greek letter.

Unfortunately, the currently available MAB drugs from Regeneron and Eli Lilly may be less potent against the omicron variant.

In my experience most people aren't testing in the official way and that started during delta (home tests or no test). The positive case numbers aren't close to reality which in turn makes the hospitalization and death rates very misleading. WAYYYYYY more people have had Covid than the numbers tell us.

I would probably not get tested. If I did I would not tell anybody. I never got tested when my daughter brought it home in August and I got sick for 3 hours.

Any official test can and will be used against you in the court of Covid fear mongering. It's why the only test I have received this entire time has been the antibody test when I give blood.

Don't think you know how the rapid at home tests work.

That's why I said "official test".

Won't take an at home test because the information it provides is useless. Won't change anything

Best approach. There isn't any need to test moving forward really unless you are visiting one of the rare folks who either cannot take the vaccine and are very immunocompromised or vaccinated and the same. Even then, if you feel ill, just don't visit them in the first place.

Yeah, that's your story. But my kids, for example, have to show a negative test to get back on campus after the break. Looks like the NFL is finally caving to reason.

A lot of people I know are just continuing to press on with life at his point even if they have COVID in order to live their lives and get us to hurd immunity sooner rather than later.

Where are your kids in school? Just curious since I'm in CA and my kids have never been tested.

Georgia. Have to test negative before coming back from Break.

I think MANY people will avoid testing for minor illness. I think that is fine.

The new pfizer treatment pill may change that especially for more ill/high risk patients.

Had this exact thing happen three weeks ago. We have been trained by whoever to think that everything is COVID. Wed start off with sinus, thurs Friday same, mild cough. Wake up Sat and feel like crap. Tell the wife I gots the COVID. Have kids going back to college post TDay. Going back to HS. Other things I am scheduled to do. So this is where my mental state is…"if I have it I would rather not pass it to others." So I go to urgent care, they test me and tell me I have an ol Pre COVID virus. Whoop. I am out of there. Go about my life. Choke down vitamins, Tylenol, and Sudafed.

I've never understood why so many take test .
I've never had a Covid test, never will.

People just rush out to go get tested… what the hell for?

The rapid tests being pushed right now have a high false negative rate - as much as 50%, if your viral load is low.

But people keep testing over and over and over because they have symptoms and then they eventually get a positive test. Sometimes after their symptoms have subsided - but then they are told to isolate for another 10 days.

My thought is don't test unless you absolutely have to - ie, for international travel. If you have any cold or flu-like symptoms, just stay home from work and away from high risk family/friends.
