Came down with the flu yesterday and got a positive result today confirming the infection. While talking to doc he said that the flu is really bad in the BCS area right now and that they are barely seeing any covid cases.

Curious if you received a flu shot this year?

That makes sense, considering we are not masking like we did last year. Did you get the flu shot? Hope you feel better soon.

I don't think masks have anything to do with it.

They might. Key word is "might." Pubmed, doing what they do best, has accumulated a series of studies on masks and flu. Mixed results quite naturally.

This report is dated 2010, so before Covid and before better masks (N95/KN95) were widely available to the public.

I've only had one patient with it over the weekend from an ER note. I wouldn't say it is "real bad" yet but likely about to pop.

I haven't seen a + COVID in a long time, probably 6 weeks. Predominant virus circulating at this time are parainfluenza and adenovirus.

This is good though, correct? If there is a rise in flu it means that Covid isn't as strong or prevalent anymore. Can docs confirm this?

I don't buy into the viral competition theory. I think flu/RSV were just low because people were taking viral precautions for the first time in human history. I have seen multiple virus active in the same patient at the same time. No reason to believe COVID cancels out other pathogens it just doesn't make microbiological sense.

Some months ago, the Covid testing kiosks at TAMU switched from an oral to a shallow nasal swab. When I asked why, I was told they were testing for "other things" as well, including the flu. This sort of indicates that there might be at least some data floating around out there about the prevalence of influenza in the BCS area...if you can find said data.

There are a lot of answers in the data that we DON'T have. If the vaccines were better than natural immunity - drug companies would be screaming the results from the rooftops. In the same way; if masks definitively worked, the data would be... well... definitive.

So looking through Dallas County's HHS reports, here are the total flu positive counts 7 weeks into flu season from the previous 5 years (September xx - March xx+1)

2021 - 100
2020 - N/A
2019 - 1213
2018 - 169
2017 - 497

Would kinda seem like we are in for just another normal "lite" flu season.

Yeah I tell families the experts are predicting a big flu season, but they are generally as accurate as the weather folks predicting a bad hurricane season every year. They are just guessing.

Q: wouldn't it figure that we see a wave of cold and flu outbreaks?

We're (in effect) reintegrating with the bulk of humanity who hasn't distanced/quarantined for the past 2 years and associated illnesses which have been mutating during this period. Since our immune systems may be a few steps behind, I would expect that would prove to be fertile ground.

Is that train of thought reasonable, or am I missing some things?
KidDoc

No that is reasonable and we have seen that with RSV, Parainfluenza especially in the kids under 4.

Other parts of the world were not devastated with a flu outbreak during their flu season (China, Australia, etc) and that is usually a good predictor of our flu seasons. Now that could be because they are still doing viral mitigation behaviors but only time will tell.

I've been seeing lots of friends coming down with colds and flus already and winter is just getting started. These are younger people that weren't really affected by covid when they caught it, but are getting a nasty virus this time around.

Will be interesting to see how this winter pans out considering we didn't see much of anything last winter.

There are PLENTY of respiratory viruses running around but not much flu. I think your buddies are maybe just calling it flu. When we perform respiratory NAAT testing on the sick kids they have been turning up adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza for the past month.

My son is in the A&M Corps and they had Flu-A run through their outfit weekend after Thanksgiving. Several kids tested positive and then buddies with similar symptoms so they were all treated for flu.

My son was Flu A positive a little over a week ago. Tamiflu and rest worked. Symptom free after 2.5 days

Several other kids and adults getting it too. Tamiflu took 3 pharmacies to find.
