Our 7 yo tested positive Thursday night. We have kept him isolated away from the rest of the family in our master bedroom. I have been vaxxed and had a breakthrough case so i have been the main parent taking care of him. He hasnt had fever since Day 3 and tomorrow will be day 6. I know they say 10 days, but that seems excessive. When is it realistically safe for him to come hang out at least? Mask on?

Let the kid out now. He's fine and everyone else will be fine.

Agreed. I'm assuming that if anyone in your household eligible for a vaccine that is at high risk for severe disease is vaccinated, then there is no reason to keep a 7-yr-old in isolation.

Ummm. Day 1? I don't care how contagious or dangerous this virus is when my kids got it there was no way my wife and I were going to isolate them from the rest of the family (They laid on the couch most of the day watching tv). My wife got it from one of the kids, I never got it while working from home the entire time. Nobody is vaccinated, wife and kids recovered fully in 5 days.

I have to agree with the rest. Get him out of isolation. It's not leprosy. You are vaccinated so safe. I assume you have other kids and as long as not obese or some other comorbidities they are safe too. If wife is vaccinated she is safe. If wife is not vaccinated and concerned I would question why not vaccinated.

I have never isolated from any sick immediate family member and cannot imagine ever doing so unless maybe severely immunocompromised. .

Mask off. It's just theater to wear it.

That's what I figured. We have three other kids. Clock starts over at school for them to stay home if there is another case which is what we tried to avoid. He had a slight cough still but no fever now for two days.

We generally let our daughter, who had a pretty rough case of it at 12 just a few weeks ago, hang out as much as she wanted as soon as she broke her fever. When she was running a fever she had to stay in her room.

Same way we have always treated contagious diseases. As soon as she was clear of fever she was back with the rest of us.

Do you have a primary care doctor for the child? I'd recommend you get their opinion.

My 8 year old got it, rest of us were vaxxed, so we just kept him from home, but otherwise he was not isolated
My Pfizer 15 YO got a runny nose
Team Moderna Adults had no symptoms.
8 year old had a slight fever for about a week, and said food tasted funny, but otherwise was fine

Good luck

Are they requiring contact tracing? Just stop reporting that nonsense. If the kid is sick, keep them home. When they feel better, send them to school.

Because his 82 year old diabetic grandfather and grandmother watches him for us at times.

Thanks for your concern.

My only question was regarding to the 10 day guidance.

I always find this question so strange. More information is always better than less. Why would you want to be ignorant about your kid's health? Knowing a diagnosis can also help you keep an eye out for potential issues before they become a bigger problem. And if you can do one small thing to try to avoid other kids at school from getting ill by keeping your kid home a little longer, why wouldn't you want to?

And by isolation I mean he has books, iPad, tv with Netflix Disney plus. I've been hanging out with him. I sleep in there. We take walks every day. I mainly just wanted to know when he can be around his siblings because 10 days seems a lot when every other sickness is 24 hours after fever. .

Here is why. My nephew is a completely healthy 15 year old who plays high school football. His brother lost smell so they tested them both. Both positive. He never had a single symptom. It has been nearly 4 weeks and he still hasn't been able to play football again because of "school protocols." Schools are absurd, my kids won't be tested no matter what.

I just ran into the same thing.

My 12 year old daughter caught Covid about three weeks ago now and was sicker than snot. That week our schools changed their contact tracing rules to include siblings. So not only did my daughter miss(which was right cause she was actually sick) my son also missed 10 days of school. No symptoms and even tested negative twice so he could keep playing baseball.

Now my son was sick this weekend but there was a zero % chance I was going to test him unless it got serious. No way my daughter was going to miss ten more days of school along with him. And walla, his fever broke on Monday and he is back in school today.

Our isd wants siblings home 10 days but if one has has covid up to 90 days ago they don't have to at least.

Being a parent with young children, I've always realized the impossible nature of the whole "quarantine" thing. HSers might have the maturity to handle it. I quarantined in 6th grade with chicken pox and actually had a blast. Had my own TV, mom and dad bought me a bunch of stuff to keep me busy, got food I wanted etc. BUt little ones just can't be quarantined. My 5 year old? Ya, nope not happening. I look at it this way, if you have a small child, accept the fact that if they get it, they get it. So might you if you haven't already. Part of the price of being a parent. Plus, its not humane to lock little kids up in a room unless for time out or punishment etc.

It's honestly time to start viewing this whole thing (eh he, clears throat and prepares for the backlash) like the flu. We have a vaccine and we have to stop living in fear. I get that the hospitals are filled and honestly I do not really care overall. I pray for those in the hospital, no doubt. But we are past the point now where our lives need to be put on absolute hold for a damn virus.

As I was told by multiple nurses and doctors during my trips to the clinic with my kids over the years, if the test doesn't change the treatment it is unnecessary to expose young kids to potentially bad experiences with a doctor. Shoving a q-tip into their brain qualifies as such, which is why they chose not to test him.

The same reason our pediatrician rotates nurses that give shots each visit. So they don't associate pain with a specific person.

You want your kids to be as comfortable at the doctor's office as possible for when things really go bad and need the kid to remain calm. The same principle applies to livestock and pets.

Pretty much all viral pathogens are contagious 1-3 days prior to symptoms. I wouldn't isolate from family at all especially if they are vaccinated and low risk. Maybe keep him from grandparents and public and school but that is about it.

You shouldn't send anyone over there that is sick, common sense.

Well duh. Flu/strep is 24 hours no fever, COVID is 10 days.

All I was trying to do was ask about the 10 day isolation deal.

I don't really need opinions on anything else.

When I had it they told me realistically it was 3-4 days after onset of symptoms, but 10 days was the government guidelines they were required to parrot.

My ISD sent me a truancy warning for 5 unexcused absences. We had our 13 yo isolated because he was around with direct contact his friend at school and sister. Both positive. The school wouldn't except isolation as an excuse. Should have just told them he had diarrhea.

Did you communicate with the school as it was going on? Did you bother testing to see if isolation was needed?

Edit: would be shocked for a school to be adverse to conservatism with covid but maybe needed more communication?

If you saw how many kids were out using this excuse you wouldn't blame the school.

Our high school has multiple students that are trying to use this for a second and third time this year, not even 2 months into the year.

Schools are funded by attendance, so you are stealing money out of the budget by allowing it. Fever? Stay home. Someone walked by you at the park with the sniffles? Get to class.

This is why many schools do not contact trace anymore.

I guess you forget that not everyone cares about education the same...

Add to it school districts won't give zeros for missing work and require maximum flexibility for missing work. Covid only made it worse because even during quarantine they have to have full access to keep up and not be penalized.

My wife had a kid drop off 6 weeks of half finished assignments at one time. School requires they receive no less than a 50 for those assignments categorized as daily work.

That's your future high school graduate.

I guess I do not understand why someone would isolate a 13 year old that had direct contact but is showing no symptoms. That's the kind of thing we have to get away from if we are going to move forward.

Are they really? Not trying to be snarky, I keep hearing this but haven't seen much evidence that this is the case in Houston.
