There was a post yesterday about delaying elective surgeries due to alleged zero capacity of ICU beds in Houston. Well since I have one coming up, I called the hospital, talked to both medical and admin staff in charge of the surgery and was absolutely assured multiple times that if anything goes wrong, they have a spot ready for me. Maybe it was a lie, maybe not but take it for what it's worth.

Yeah I'm guessing some places are real bad, some places are "bad but we can find a spot for you" and some places are fine.

Anecdotal, but hospital in Fort Worth - friend had a seizure and was taken to hospital. People are very much in beds out in the hallways, but they did find a trauma room for him.

But docs have said even though they like to keep seizure patients overinght, they are likely sending him home tonight because they don't have a bed for him.

It seems likely that multiple physicians on this board are lying for dramatic effect.

(to be clear, that is sarcasm)

It can be a day to day thing. My wife did a kidney transplant the other day and there was no ICU room so they did the post op in the OR for about 4 hours until an ICU bed opened up.

So keep in mind when someone says "ICU beds are full" they mean "ICU beds were full at my hospital and the others I checked on at a given cut in time".

They have plenty of beds. "Staffed" bed shortage is likely the real issue, if this is even true.

I do know staffing is a big issue for a lot of hospitals, I think a year and a half of Covid has caused a lot of burnout and getting new staff is a challenge, just like in every industry. So while there may be beds, the ability to staff them has become more difficult.

Can I ask what your procedure is? I'm only curious because I was speaking to a PA working in TMC tonight and he said they're ranking availability based on need to confirm availability.
