That is primarily due to the proliferation of the Delta variant and the mRNA spike protein in Pfizer specifically does not match well with the mutated Delta spike. Sucks but it was feared that something like that could happen.
It was also widely predicted that boosters may be needed someday as the only way to know how long a vaccine lasts is cases over time. This is why most vaccines are in phase 3 for 5+ years before they are rolled out in non-emergent situations.
The good news is that many vaccines give long term immunity when there is a long gap between doses-- actually every vaccine except flu and DTaP give long term immunity with a staggered dosing schedule, many of them 3 dose.
But only time will tell with Moderna & Pfizer vax.
