My Dad got the covid vaccine last night and he is having all the symptoms. Headache, fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. Did anyone experience something similar? What medications did you take? Does it usually subside in 24 hours? The hard part is he can't keep anything down.

Very common it means it is working- take ibuprofen.

I got the Moderna and with my second shot I felt like hell about 12 hours after but it was well managed by alternating Tylenol and Motrin, not sure that's what docs advise but it worked for me. It only lasted about 10 hours.

OP, I hope you have mild symptoms, and full recovery and no lingering side effects. https://www.openvaers.com/covid-data

I'm someone who stopped getting flu shots because of the associated flu-like symptoms and had 0 side effects with covid vax. I'm sure it just varies from person to person.

So why does the flu vaccine not give these kind of side effects typically and Covid vaccine does?
Speak for yourself. We've been getting flu shots for years and usually feel under the weather for awhile afterwards.

It's been worth it for us though...

I get mild flu like symptoms every year after my flu shot. All Moderna did to me was give me a knot in my arm for a couple days and the 2nd shot after 12 hours made me feel bad enough to take two tylenol and go back to sleep; 4 hours later I was fine.

Typical duration is 1-3 days. Almost always a 24 hour thing.

Ibuprofen is vastly superior to Tylenol for the anti inflammatory action.

Flu does have the same side effects. Not as frequent because it is a pretty crappy shot overall. Efficacy varies but in the mid 30s last few years.

I've had about 10 flu vaccinations in my lifetime and was very sick after 3 of them for several days. 24 hour mild symptoms a couple other times. So about 50/50 for me on getting symptoms.

All responses and people vary with different vaccines. I've had mild reactions to flu vaccines while the Shingrix was a butt kicker. Covid vaccine was mild.

I get a flu shot every year and have never had any immune reaction. Not a sore arm, not a fever, nada. The first Moderna left me with a sore arm for 2 weeks. The second one in the opposite arm did one better and 24 hours after the injection it put me in bed for 24 hours. Chills, fever, shakes, body aches, you name it. After 24 hours everything but the sore injection site went away.

Isn't the flu vaccine a "traditional" vaccine while COCID is MRNA?

Wouldn't that affect the side effects?

It's not really a side effect. It's your body having an immune reaction.

Is it normal for the injection site to still be swollen a full 7 days after my first moderna dose? It's about the size of an ant bite and a little tender. I haven't heard others mention it but maybe it's normal for immunizations. Thanks!

I had zero reaction to the 1st, 24 hours of feeling under the weather with the 2nd, and then about the same crappiness with the booster.

So what does it mean if you get both shots and have no reaction whatsoever? That you're dead inside and have no soul?

Its not exactly the same, but had a warm red splotch creep up right at the 7 day mark and last a couple days. It wasn't super common but enough to be given a name i dont remember…

I had worse side effects with a flu vaccine a few years back than I had with Covid. From what I have seen and my own experience, the side effects are all over the place....that's what the Covid and flu vaccines have in common.

I personally hoped for the reported side effects when I got my vaccinations because I viewed it as proof that my body was producing the intended antibodies. Instead I got nothing other than a sore arm. For all of those with side effects, don't worry and realize the shots are doing what is intended to ultimately give you the best defense against COVID.

I actually do and have never had a reaction. Neither has anyone in my family.
I have had the flu shot every year for the past 25 and never had a reaction. But I also did not have any noticeable reaction to my Pfizer vaccine shots. No one in my family had much of a reaction except the sore arms and my wife felt chilled the evening after the second shot.

Now the Shingrix vaccine shot for shingles was a different matter. Both the first and second shots put me down for 24-36 hours. My wife only had a reaction after the second dose of Shingrix and not as bad as mine. Still glad I got it though because I've seen how miserable shingles can be.

I didn't have any reaction to the Pfizer but the Shingrix was really painful going in. I would swear it was thick as syrup. My arm hurt for a couple of weeks. For a general reaction, I think I was feeling yucky for about 24 hours, but not really sick, just tired, achy.

But I'm with you. I'm thrilled to have the shot and avoid the shingles. It's the worst.

In fact, I did both kinds of shingles vaccines (the old one and the new with both doses). I'd pretty much do anything to avoid shingles.

Me either or my wife. Get the flu shot every year, nothing.
