Just wanted to post my story on here in the hopes it may help someone in a similar situation.

37 Years Old, 5'6, 170 lbs, kidney transplant at the end of 2013 and fully vaccinated with Moderna.

Symptoms started on August 28 with a stuffy nose, fever started on August 2, and I tested positive on August 3. On August 4, I had no fever, 02 was at 99% but felt dizzy and had severe muscle cramps so decided to walk across the street to NYU Langone (I live in NYC). When I arrived, they did labs and the results came back with low sodium so I was admitted to the ICU. In the ICU, the only medicine they prescribed to me related to Covid was the monoclonal antibody as a conservative approach. I am checking out of the ICU today 8/9.

Moral of the story, the vaccine works even for the immunocompromised. Just remember to not drink too much water and Gatorade. Feel free to ask questions as I am happy to respond.

This is great news.

Just to better understand, what do you mean by not drinking too much Gatorade and water?

When I was sick with Covid, people told me to rest and drink plenty of fluids. I took drinking plenty of fluids to heart and was averaging 3 liters a day with minimal amounts of food. Who would have known that all that liquid, combined with minimal food could decrease the sodium level in my blood that drastically.

Yes, too much water can be harmful. Water can dilute your electrolyte levels so low (especially sodium) that it can result in serious or fatal complications.

Yup, seen plenty of people come into the ER for dangerously low sodium after their doctor told them to "drink plenty of water". I tell people that they really should only be downing fluids if they are thirsty or exercising or experiencing fluid loss (diarrhea, vomiting, acute illness, etc.), or in the case in the elderly where they are prone to dehydration and have a diminished capacity to sense when they are dehydrated. This myth of "you need to drink 8 cups of water a day" has caused many people to go overboard with overhydrating. In the case of fluid loss/acute illness, it is best to be hydrating with a regular diet and water, or if you can't keep food down, drink fluids with ample electrolytes and a bit of sugar (pedialyte, Gatorade 0, etc.).
