Nearly 40% of new COVID patients were vaccinated - compared to just 1% who had been infected previously.

Solid contribution to the topic.

How old and unhealthy are you to have that level of fear?

Sorry to hear that cone. I am about to turn 40 and most of my friends are over the hill, or close too it and the majority of us had covid, including most if my immediate family. We all made it through just fine and will definitely be enjoying natural immunity. Looking forward to more data to drive home that natural immunity means something and can't be ignored any longer.

I would certainly get vaccinated if not already blessed to be infected pre-vax. I lost trust in medical community and news probably earlier than most. I had been donating life saving plasma for 9 months while doctors and media said natural immunity lasted 2 weeks, then 3 months, then 6 months, and now it appears years better than vaccine.

I even had an MD at methodist tell me in person "a lot of people are getting reinfected after 2 weeks". I asked if it was his patients or others at methodist, and he said "uh I just heard about it".

Sorry to all the great MDs here, but this whole pandemic knocked your profession down a couple pegs. It's been a messaging disaster.

Maybe natural immunity is better than vaccination, but that is in no way a reason to not get vaccinated if you haven't had COVID before.

Cone's best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw his next door neighbor pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

There is if your risk/reward profile tilts to COVID being a weak flu or less to you individually.

So what do we do if we have had it and are over it? What are the rates of breakthrogh infections, reinfections, and breakthrough reinfections?

We already know reinfection is super rare. In fact you don't even hear about them much in the news. I've heard many more cases of being vaccinated and developing COVID than reinfection.

The vaccine may be perfectly safe, but they are still being studied. How long was asbestos and tobacco seen as safe by science before discovering the long term effects?

So, what do I gain by being recovered and getting the vaccine? A more robust antibody response? What if mine is fine? How can we test for that?

The way I see it is vaccinated or recovered, you have done your part.

Nothing. If you already had the virus then there is no reason to get the vaccine. I think this is proven to be true more and more true every day.

Sign up here for free antibody testing (includes both natural and vaccine-induced antibodies). Immunity is more than antibodies but will give you some idea of where you are. https://sph.uth.edu/projects/texascares/

Closest place to me is an hour each way. Wish they would have had the labs mapped out before all the questions.

Guess I wont be in their survey after all.

In summary, vaccination and previous infection look to be pretty much equivalent with a very slight edge to vaccination being more robust.

I know in the past, most doctors on this board said if you're relatively young and have had COVID previously, they don't recommend needing a vaccine. Is that still the case?

Saw the CDC and WHO are pushing for everyone to get vaccinated, even if you had COVID before, because they don't trust how long natural immunity lasts.

A few recommendations to get vaccinated despite prior infection:

Thanks to you and Fido for the information. Not confusing at all haha. Guess it depends on which doctor you talk to or which article you read. I'm just frustrated that all the talk is vaccinated vs unvaccinated and no one seems to include the thousands of us who've already had the virus.

No kidding. Same as the poster above who described a two week flu. If I can prevent either of those reactions, count me in!

20% to 30% of Americans have had covid. There's a reason the media and White House only refer to vaccinated vs. anti-vaxx: division and politicization. And $$$.

Here's a study done one international travelers arriving in Qatar Feb-April of this year where everyone was quarantined and tested. The article and figures have some good data, but the TLDR is that it looks like immunity from natural infection is roughly 8% less than immunity from vaccination during that time period. So maybe slightly lower, but still very good based on the data.
