Our 5 year old daughter attends dance class in northwest Austin and today we received an email from the studio updating their mask policy to require anyone over the age of 2 to wear a mask. Needless to say I fired off a scathing email right away threatening to pull our daughter from their school. Normally I wouldn't speak up but this garbage has to end. I'm so pissed right now.

Does your kid like dancing in a mask better than not dancing? If she has no problem with it I guess it's up to her.

I agree it's stupid and nothing scientific supports it. At least it's not a 8 hour school day.

Don't be discouraged. Adjust and keep on living. Make life good for you and more importantly for her. I bet she is super resilient if she has a parent as strong as you are.

We'll see what she says when it's time to get ready for dance this evening. She's....strong willed ha.

Bro we played baseball outdoors in masks in NW Austin last Spring. You gotta do what you gotta do and ya gotta pick your battles. We figured baseball with a mask beats the hell outta no baseball at all.

Why? Why do you have to? I know of plenty of people that played baseball, or in most cases softball last year, and didn't wear masks. Particularly outdoors.

Why not fight back and end the nonsense? Stick up for yourself and don't just blindly say you have to do it.

Easy. We play on city owned fields and its the golden rule. He who has the gold (the city) makes the rules.

You're likely referring to select ball on privately owned fields. We played that too and it was glorious.

My point to OP was that if the bosses (dance studio) say you wear a mask or you don't participate you wear a mask or you sit your ass at home. Or find a new place (select fields) to do your activity.

Fortunately, city governments can't enact mask mandates now so a lot of this nonsense will be a non-issue.

We just walked past the signs on city owned fields that tried to limit group size and require distancing. Somehow no one in our group died. And no one from the city made a peep about it.

My experience has been that 90% of places that put the signs up don't care to enforce it, they just do it because they have to in order to appease the Karens.

Good luck OP.

To those who saying "if the kid doesn't care..."

You need to be a parent. If you are good with them wearing masks then fine. Let them mask up for the next decade if you want. If you believe masks are wrong / ineffective / silly and want to teach your kids how to stand up for something....that is a good thing for them to see. Don't be disrespectful or mean but there are ways to stand up for what you want and teach them that is ok.

Kids don't know better and if we as parents do not guide them then they would just wear the mask forever. Our kids would also eat low nutrition meals (McDs, donuts, etc) if it was up to them too but that doesn't make it right.

I came home and told my daughter about the new policy and she said she didn't want to go. Problem solved. I guess we'll look for a new studio.

Now I'm in hot water with the wife though for letting her skip out. Oh well sometimes you just can't win.

Can't speak to dance but we live in NW Austin and no outdoor sports required masks.

That being said my sons hockey required masks when he started learn to play sessions earlier this year.

I can't imagine trying to play hockey or any other intense sport with a freaking face diaper on

I am a parent. I have sent several emails to my son's superintendent about changing the masking policy. I will refuse to send my son to school if they make him wear a mask. But I also want to give my kids agency. My kid probably would have said no, just like ReloadAg's did (my son is 6), but you could also step into some sticky situations if you make decisions based on your emotions and don't consider your children's.

Some kids who hate masks, might be OK doing it for a 1 hr dance class. They might like dancing in class more than they hate wearing a mask. The same kid might refuse to do it for an 8 hour school day.

I originally said in my post "Dont threaten, do it" as that will hit them where it hurts (the pocketbook) and they might reconsider the stupid policy, but I took that back because well, its the kid going, not you.

I get it. 1 hour class vs 8 hour day.

My daughter does dance and I wouldn't let her be sad and miss class with her friends if she had to wear a mask. On the other hand, for 8 hour school day that is 100% where dad/mom has to step in.

I only caution handing over too much of the decision to ones kids and not teaching them to be principled in a fair and calm and respectful manner. Here in this dance situation it would warrant, at a minimum, a "are you serious" from parents to the studio. I would tell my kids it's silly and they shouldn't be made to wear a mask but would allow. I feel like I could easily be in this situation in a month or so when we start back up.

I agree but it's 7 year olds learning to play the game so not sure how intense it actually is in this case.

My understanding is that virtual schooling is not being funded at this point.

Abbott has an exec order out saying ISDs are forbidden from requiring masks at any school in Texas after June ...6th I think? So that would still be in play. ISDs cant do it.

However, I am not sure about virtual schools being funded. My wife works for an ISD in the administrations so I can ask her, but from my understanding, school districts across the state are being flooded with millions of dollars in ESSER funds to pretty much use at their own discretion as long as it has something to do with COVID. Some are using this to increase teacher pay, some are using it to hire more teachers, some may choose to use it for virtual learning.

Also didn't Abbott's executive order in May prohibit schools from requiring masks?
Teslag

That's correct. Pretty much every government agency other than prisons and hospitals are prohibited from mask requirements.

TEA will not fund virtual learning. ESSER funds can be used for anything that closes achievement gaps due to "COVID learning loss" so it's a grey area. Depends on the skill of the BS-artist accountable for explaining the funding. I dont think district-wide virtual learning like it was last year would pass muster, nor do they have enough funds to do that.
Knucklesammich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not sure on that part but as of a couple of days ago someone I k is up the chain at TEA said that there was no funding for virtual students. That said with the new spike who knows if that will change

7 year olds face zero risk from the virus. People need to stand up to this bull****

If you've ever been around youth hockey or hockey in general you would know that its not the type of crowd to huddle up in a bunker. Their mandate came from the county last time (being an indoor business).

I'm not going to hurt a really cool facility that opened during a pandemic whose hands are tied because masks are an inconvenience.

My son also plays Little League so don't take this the wrong way but this isn't a community run sporting organization, this is a giant facility run for a profit that falls under county health guidelines and includes a ton of other tenants besides hockey.

If you are in the Austin area check it out: The Crossover, it is a cool spot.

I'd argue that a cool facility wouldn't enforce ludicrous nonsense like making seven year olds wear masks while playing sports

I'd say if the county says you have to do it then you run the risk of being shut down and losing your investment and business.

They weren't making 7 year olds wear masks they were enforcing a mandate that everyone had to wear masks.

Telling someone to fight an inconvenience by going out of business is silly.

We were there last night mask free. Again they follow the laws and regulations set before them or suffer the consequences. Not going to fault any business owner for that.

The county can't issue requirements, only recommendations per Abbott's EO
Knucklesammich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That is correct, as I mentioned there WAS a mask mandate. Don't care who eventually called it off or who might call it back. My point was I wasn't punishing a business for following mandates set forth.
