Atlanta public schools announced mask mandate to start school.
LOL. Its insane.

Reading an article on this just now:

According to officials, around 18% of eligible students are fully vaccinated and 58% of district employees are vaccinated or plan to be at the start of the school year in August.

Only 58% and that includes "plan to" which likely means "never will"

If teachers dont care enough to get the vaccine why should students be punished?

Thank goodness Abbott issued that mandate or we'd be seeing this **** in Texas.

Round Rock just announced virtual learning as an option for K-6 grade, further details by 7/29.

I am fine if they want to figure out some way to get kids a virtual option...HOWEVER...it cannot be at the expense of the kids in class.

The virtual kids need their own teacher and own curriculum. I do not want my kid having to look at a computer screen all day b/c some kid has parents without a brain and wants to keep their kids home...

GA Governor had a similar order and Atlanta said screw you likely with CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics as cover. Better not happen here.

Gubernatorial powers vary widely by state. Abbott's order here is ironclad. Especially with Paxton and a friendly court.

No they need to take a lesson from the rural districts.

Come to class, or unenroll your student and home school. No other option. We will not waste tax payer money and resources on this nonsense.

Right now as far as I know there is no funding at the state level for virtual learning, that being said they might be hedging that it will be funded in some fashion.

The school is wasting resources they have offering it, I'm not claiming they are getting extra cash for it. They should spend every penny on in class learning only to hopefully make a dent in the massive deficit their students are at on their education.

Anything other than that is a distraction and a waste. The issue of students not being on level is the issue no one is discussing.

ETA: I saw the comment "extra teachers". Have you seen the job openings at districts? Some districts have seen 30-40% turnover in teachers as they flee the profession. There are no "extra teachers" around.

Make no mistake I agree with you. If people saw all the data that I've seen (spouse works for TEA) they would lose their mindsbasically there are populations that will take years to catch up if that is even possible.

My mom retired after this year. After teaching math for decades she saw how far behind these students are and said good bye. There is no plan to catch them up either. If you are poor and/or having working parents you are screwed compared to your classmates that had tutors and help at home.

I'm a parent. My kids have been told to not wear a mask anywhere the go. Regardless of whether the signs say non vaccinated persons need masks. If they have a problem the can deal with me.

I've found that it's more important to teach my kids that stupid rules shouldn't be followed. Don't allow idiots to dictate your life.

Maybe it is because I am not intelligent and do not know how to use "the google".....

why is it so hard to find statistics, for 0 - 17, of total cases, total deaths, total deaths with comorbidity. Would be a nice fun fact as I feel like you might need a super computer to calculate the % of deaths in kids w/ covid that have no comorbidity....

It's not zero risk. But it's low. We do not know though about long term issues. That said i do not agree in masking kids.

Right. I know its not zero risk. Nothing is.

Seems like that analysis should be easy to pull together for all age groups but they seem to not combine that data for some reason.

I dont agree in masking either....discussion on it is going to become much more intense as schools start back up and a simple analysis on that level should easily make it clear if masks are needed "to protect the children" or not....

1) Of course students are allowed to wear masks, but I believe they just can't be mandated to be. Some parents in the district where I live (north Texas near the OK border--OK has a similar order, only it's a law) are planning to send kids in masks.

2) K12 (Stride) is free virtual schooling, which is a public school option for any parent who wants it, taught with live classes and certified teachers in each state. So there is an option.

This is FYI only, as I am too exhausted by the whole situation to actually say much more, but I hope these two bits of info are helpful in all this craziness!
Knucklesammich

That is correct, you can send your kids in masks just as teachers can wear masks. Same with virtual if offered.

I partially agree. For a public school funded by tax payer money, yes, mask mandates should be debated. We're all forced to pay into that.

For a private dance studio, either adhere or find another place. That's an at-will transaction for both parties.

Mandate should not be a debate. Wear a mask if you want. It's allowed. If really concerned wear 3 to stop virus from coming in. Don't mandate fact covers.

Unfortunately when everyone is paying into something then there will be a larger variance on opinion, thus debate. I feel that the debate is justified as we don't have a choice on paying taxes.

In this scenario it's a private citizen and dance school. This is not a forced transaction. Find another dance school.

I am fine leaving it to our state elected officials. They can decide.
