The part that frustrates me is we had 3 months to put a plan in place if ICU occupancy began increasing. What were Texas hospitals doing during this time other than furloughing their elective surgery staff?
All those preparations were done. There are nearly 1000 extra ICU beds in the TMC now available and the temp stuff is being reconstructed at NRG.

Where did you hear otherwise?

I live in Austin. I've heard of no such contingency plan here.

There's at least one temp hospital that could be stood up accommodating 1500 covid patients. I used googled and that was the first several results.

Next door neighbor works for an event company that has the contract to set up the structure. If I'm not mistaken they set it up during the first lockdown...I believe it came back down but with obvious contingencies to set it back up.

At what point do these measures delay herd immunity?
The herd immunity that science isn't even settled on being a real impact?

If herd immunity isn't going to be a thing then that's even more of a reason to return to normal now. We can't stay in a state of perpetual lockdowns until a vaccine comes sometime in December or next year, if there even is a vaccine at all. There's no guarantee that these lockdowns are going to save lives in the long run. They are simply destroying livelihoods.

People need to accept that covid is a part of life like every other disease. The reality is that you're probably going to catch it and that you're overwhelming likely to recover from it. Unfortunately it's probably going to be awhile before the rest of society realizes this. We will have caused so much self inflected pain by then and will have no real positive results to show for it.

Good post.

Whatever happens from here on out, we will learn and move on with our lives. We will visit other nations, study everything, and figure out how to improve.

What is so common in other nations, like South Korea, has been a once in a generation event here. They have found a way to go back to a routine life and control it. We are panicking and fighting with each other. Why?

I find it embarrassing as a country we are still talking and acting the way we are on all sides of the issues. No one seems to be coming together on this, and no one still has an answer. At this rate, we will be in a second Great Depression soon enough.

Trump, Cuomo, Abbott, Brown, CDC, WHO, Athletes, owners, federal reserve, $3.5 trillion unaccounted for so far, riots, CHAZ, House, Senate.... the handling from all of them is just one of shock.

Hate to break it to you, but this country will likely never again unite and come together on anything

Those other countries took it seriously and did what they had to do. We have people who don't even think it's real.

Increased hospitalizations are 100% Covid? Or bow wave of deferred elective procedures that have been postponed past two months.

A doctor on our board (Dr Not Yet A Dr Ag) said that in his San Antonio ER he went from seeing 1-2 covid patients coming in a day to 50-60 in 2 week.

What evidence do you have that heard immunity exists? The experts have none so I am anxious to hear.

Here's a Nobel Prize winner again suggesting that COVID "burns out" when roughly 20% of the population has been infected.

I'll admit this uptick is threatening that more so than we've had. I'm still not sure shutting down and going backwards is the answer though. I also think the anti mask people(I was one, but have come around even though I absolutely despite them) are worried that businesses will still be closed. If there was a sense of security

If it was just mandated at all indoor activities we'd probably be fine
So in Northern California we have had mandatory masks since reopening. All inside public places and no large gatherings. We've seen an uptick since the protests which corresponded with reopening bars with low capacity but nothing like LA. I attribute it to masks and most people using common sense. That said, last week I know two people whose young adult kids visited, one for AZ, the other from Texas. Both developed symptoms within days of arriving and are positive. If I know two, this is going to be a problem no matter how careful we've been.

2,300 deaths in a state of 29 million people. Tell me again why we should be operating differently unless you are high risk and elderly or in a senior living facility.
Do you have no older people in your life that you would sacrifice for? Most people are lucky enough to either have older family members present in their lives or like me, have had them and understand the sadness at losing them and are therefore willing to inconvenience ourselves for the benefit of others. It's a simple respect for others.

It has.

A potentially more plausible explanation is the seasonal nature of these viruses with respect to latitude. California is actually a good laboratory for this given the uniformity of policies and the distance between SoCal and NorCal population centers.

I don't think it's a pure coincidence, based on policy alone, that the more southern metros in the US have seen a different high-level pattern than the northern metros.
Keegan99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Following up on that, I don't think the virus is simply "months behind" in Mexico. Latitude matters. And the parts of the US that are more like Mexico will tend to have curves shaped more like Mexico, generally speaking. There will, of course, end up being impacts due to health, quality of care, suspect data quality, etc.

Is the TABC "required" to issue permits? Seems like if the TABC just temporarily suspended permits there wouldn't be a lot, legally, bars could do.

Ironically, a lot of people who have been ardent supporters of "common sense" gun control laws are suddenly against temporary restrictions on their ability to go get drunk.

Actually Northern California is just more on board with it. Far more people in SoCal less compliant. They opened back up sooner as well.

Trust me everyone here In LA is wearing masks everywhere. People will stare you down if you don't have a mask on even if you're outside minding your own damn business nowhere near anyone else. This is what makes me wonder about this whole mask thing, how is LA, who will follow newsome and garcetti and do as they're told leading all the Texas municipalities where there are probably much less folks wearing masks and things have been opened more so than here in CA?

Completely disagree. The heard mentally vis--vis masks is real here in LA, to include businesses refusing service without masks

ETA: well except for all of the rioters & looters, they don't seem to care about gov mayor & county mask edicts. Weird I know

That's good to know! My opinion was based upon what some young adults had told me after a visit to friends down there. It sounded as if nobody was taking it seriously when in fact it was just the group they were with.
