I am a retired emergency physician who practiced over 35 years in the trenches. I've declared a lot (100's) of patients deceased during that time, but never....NEVER 100 in only 6 weeks. I can only imagine the horror, the anguish, and the exhaustion you must feel.

I helped train many residents, nurses, paramedics, & EMT's. I am in awe of how our healthcare team has responded in this crisis. I passed the baton to greatness. Y'all are the greatest generation of our profession. I am truly humbled by you & those like you. I pray for you daily. I think of you constantly. I cry for the sacrifices you and your families make and for our colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice fighting this war against an invisible enemy. Y'all are my heroes, America's heroes, & the world's heroes.

If necessary and I am recalled, I am willing to join the fray. But for now the battle is better fought by your generation.

And secondly, my GOD, this is such a call for me to join the medical field. I itch to be able to help in the way that you have been doing. As exhausting of an experience you are clearly going through, this would be perfect for all incoming nurses/doctors to read. This is the truth of what you will survive and do for your patients and if you aren't willing to be this heroic, find something else to do in life.

I love your heart and your will and spirit. Keep on surviving but remember, you're only as good to others as you are to yourself. Sleep. Rest. Your patients need you.

1100 encounters would be the number of times he went to see, examine, and devise a plan of management for a patient. For example, he may have 100 patients and did the above 11 times on each patient. 100 x 11= 1100 Encounters.
I'm sure that's not the case for him, but you get the point.

Watching Band of Brothers with my kids (I force the good ones on them). Last night was episode 6 - the one in Bastone that focused on the medic. Don't want to offend anyone who went through that (horrific), but I see shades of some of the same emotions.

Patients who were permanently damaged (physically and mentally), death that was enormous and unheard of, and Drs and nurses who put themselves in danger in order to save lives.

Take care of your mental health, Doc. You are a hero.

I'm old enough to have been in this same situation when HIV first made it's appearance. No good data or treatments. People dying alone because of fear of family getting infected, as well as the social stigma from the disease. This is so much worse. I cannot imagine what you're going through. Hang in there. Wish I could buy you a whiskey.

Can you elaborate a bit on what stage/condition you are having these encounters? i.e. Are you in an Emergency Room only seeing severe cases?

I listened to an interview of PCP doc in NY and his numbers were the following:

- 1,450 total COVID positive patients
- ~400 were considered high risk and were prescribed the HCQ/Zinc/Anitbiotic cocktail. (over 60, cancer, diabetes, etc.)
- ~1,000 were healthy and told to go home and rest and drink fluids.
- He had 2 patient deaths.

Thank you for heeding your calling with such courage, as well as taking the time to post here. The biggest questionmark we all have is lack of credible information and we have to make decisions. If people remain unaware of the true stats and risks, they might make poor choices.

In addition to your patient care, posts like this will also help save lives, jobs, or both.
